An MG Midget that used to be in Bombay shown in an advertisement here. Wonder what became of it. The owner also had a Lotus that survives in a Bombay collection.

There used to be a green one in Bombay, MG 1100. Sadly like its brothers Austin and Morris, it was scrapped in chor bazar because of that gas suspension. I saw it lying on the ground, suspension removed. I think that there is also a Wolseley in existence in Pune.

There used to be an MG Club in Bombay, with direct connections to Abingdon, around 1953 /1955. A Parsi gent became a member and the correspondence was basically with him. There are 2 different types of envelopes, Indian and British, as can be seen from the post mark. We had RMS still in 1954? The Abingdon cover carried the welcoming letter, the membership card and a rules booklet. Both are in new like condition. The Indian cover carried the circular. The member is one of the Parsi names in the circular. Is any name recognized? The secretary was one Mr. R.A. Strong. Seems to have been active in Motor sports. This MG Club had an association with WIAA, at a time when it was run by elected members.

Attached are pics of the covers, the booklet, front and back of the membership card, and the circular front and back. Looking for some feedback.

Cheers harit

Re: Pics: Classic MG cars in India

Hi Harit,

Dinshaw Pundole was associated with the Duke soft drink brand, ( his family owned it) and he had a lovely 1954 caddilac BML 6900.

Soli Kekashru Batliboi and Framji Kekashru Batliboi, lived in the bungalow at the beginning of Ridge road near teen batti and had a Rolls royce those days and a Jaguar of the fifties which may still be lying in their garages.

Framji is still alive, in his nineties and would be a good source for historical information on cars, he being associated with the industry till he retired from Mahendra, decades ago.

If I were to look at the Parsee names, the Batlibois, Pundoles, Cambata, Commisariat, Duggan, Dadyseth, to my limited knowledge were not residents of Byculla, but I may be wrong.

So I would guess one of the others, Kotwal, Captain, Nanavaty or Bhesania.

Since you have blanked out the name, perhaps now you may like to divulge what is known to you

A lovely find, thanks for sharing, even if selectively

There are many familiar names

AD Jayaram was of Jayaram GT fame, he passed away in 2008 (Sad demise.... AD.Jayaram Uncle - a true auto enthusiast!).

DP Pundol was Dara (?) who owned many special cars including a rare Porsche 356 Pre A, and the Bristol 400.

PH Heilbron was Peter, he raced the Hoosein XK120

NN Saher was Noshir, he also raced an alloy bodied XK120

MRS Captain is a name I have seen often in older racing literature, I recall a Citroen being entered more than once.

SH Captain and SR Captain and both probably Soli Captain (subject to correction) and both I'm told would race. Oldtimers tell me they were friends, and were referred to as 'Small Soli and Big Soli'

From a December 1953 issue of the Automobile Magazine of India, an announcement of the club's formation

Here is another one from Calcutta.

Re: Vintage and Classic Cars on Display in India

Saw this MG convertable last evening on Krumbigal road, Bangalore. Had a meaty, sweet exhaust note.Pics: Classic MG cars in India-addd45f7ef774ae3b8430ffc92534042.jpeg

Mods, please move to right thread if this is not the correct one.

Re: Pics: Classic MG cars in India

Spotted these two MG's in Bengaluru, yesterday.

1) MG B Fastback
Pics: Classic MG cars in India-img1786.jpg

2) MG TC
Pics: Classic MG cars in India-img1787.jpg

These cars look smaller in-person. (Sorry, for the slightly blurry pics and correct me if the model names are wrong).

Re: Pics: Classic MG cars in India

1939 MG TA Tickford Drophead Coupe is quite rare in India.

Quote:
To bridge the gap between the two-seat roadster and more substantial VA Series, a new version of the TA was launched in 1938 - the Tickford Drophead Coupé. Built by Salmons & Sons, the new model featured a telescopic steering column, a three-position insulated Landau top, wind-up windows paired with full height doors, and a windscreen that could be opened for ventilation

Quote:
It had a small 63.5mm bore and a long 102mm stroke. Power was up substantially, from 43.3 bhp to 52.4 bhp, which peaked at 5,000 instead of at 5,500. The engine may not have revved with the ferocity of the earlier cars, but the overhead valve unit was less fussy and offered greater torque.
