Looks pretty neat, do put up more pics of the exterior and the rengine bay.
Are those sidemount covers original ? Is that a blind on the rear of th passenger seat ?
Any idea if these are the original shades of colour and interior that came originally on this car. Also the woodwork looks like it has been polished, what this how the car came ? |
Hi Wasif,
The workshop where the car was being furbished had poor light and the photographs even with flash did not come out well. You may recollect we have discussed this car before
Mail of the Dharmadhikhari himself
http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/1949891-post98.html
See the posts on Car # 34 will give you the details the car in full. Only mistake I had made was the date of acquisition which is now cleared in the earlier mail
The side mounts are original.
The side glass on the rear seat has a mechanical curtain which has not been fitted as yet. The small back glass has a blind.
The car was originally fully black. The new colour of the car and matching upholstery has been added on restoration.
The wood work has been polished.
Very clean car
Cheers

This beautiful car has some wonderful history. It was used by Gandhiji for his tour of Karnataka and Tamilnadu in 1929. The museum possesses a certificate given to Gandhiji on using this car. This car was got from Pondicherry in 1970. Attachment 332499 Attachment 332500 Attachment 332501

Have you noticed in the picture, Gandhiji is sitting in a Buick, not Studebaker. Also, Gandhiji has been pasted on:) |
We had discussed this Studebaker and the connection to Gandhiji
There appears to be a confirmation from this picture taken in 1976, showing what looks like the same car. The foot note in Kannada describes that this car was used by Gandhiji when he toured Karnataka

This Sunbeam hunting tourer with special body by Brooks with hunting lights and glass fittings was built for the Maharaja of Kolhapur. This was Kolhapur 1 car. Legend is that the Maharaja stopped using this car for hunting when he had a close shave with the tiger which almost jumped into the car! Post that incedent the Maybach was used for hunting as the stort goes. The car was bought from Gujarat to Bangalore, restored in Bangalore before sold to the museum. The car was complete and very original and even had the original leather box in the rear. Definitely one of the top cars of the museum.

Shri Chhatrapati Rajaram III with the same car
Had the opportunity to visit Dharmasthala with Sripathi Rao. Dharmadhikari was very thrilled to meet Sripathi after gap of 2-3 years. He explained to us on the new car museum project coming in Srirangapatna, new Mysore. We were all super excited on the same.
Dharmadhikari himself honours Sripathi Rao
I too receive a book from him
I feel blessed to be part of this picture
This 1935 Morris 15-6 really caught my eye. Body was built under the watchful eyes of Dharmadhikari. This car looks absolutely fantastic and great addition to the museum
This 1938 Dodge was new to me
The Ford A Tudor has been finally restored and looks great
THEN and NOW of the 1947 Desoto

I am not sure if the museum authorities are aware that this Studebaker (MYB7066) originally belonged to the scientist Sir.C.V.Raman who bought it new. He was my grand uncle and I can still clearly recall the wonderful summers I spent in Bangalore as a teenager ,driving in this very car from his residence in Malleswaram to his farm in Kengeri. The car was parked along with his 1946 Mercury at his residence , "Panchavati" , on the corner of 15th Cross and 8th Main in Malleswaram, Bangalore. I believe the property still exists , although I am not sure as I have not been there in years. The Studebaker was his favorite and he preferred it to the Mercury. At the time I am referring to ( the late 60s), the car was dark green with brown upholstery.
