Period Costume Pictures in Vintage and Classic Automobile Rallies

An interesting and integral part of Vintage and Classic Automobile rallies is the period costumes by participants.I am sharing a picture of a Vauxhall Wyvern with four men wearing period costumes after applying make-up. They participated in the 1996 Nagpur rally. To help you identify them, the foursome from are L-R Brigadier General Reginald Edward Harry Dyer (who ordered the Jallianwallah Bagh firing in 1919),Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad. Now some intriguing questions?

Q. The latter three names with a common nationalistic cause are OK for company, but how come the British General is so cool with the threesome?
Q. The Wyvern is a 1948 example, whereas Dyer died in 1927, B.G. Tilak in 1920, M.K. Gandhi in January 1948. Mahatma Gandhi passed away in early 1948. Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad (1888-1958) might be the only one who might have really seen such a Vauxhall Wyvern.

i don't know why organisers call it a period costume, instead of simply calling it fancy dress, which it is.
i see from the newspaper clipping that the runners up to the winner was dressed as a roman, which is perfectly fine, had he entered the event in a roman chariot!
i doubt Dyer would have ever dressed like a goon from a Subhash Ghai film, the real life villain that he was, he was still a military man and wouldn't ever dress up to look as ridiculous as here.
the fiat doesn't deserve a comment.

I seem to remember a Mumbai vintage event thread where there were some pictures of a family that consistently won the prize for period costumes - perhaps one of the Vintage section regulars could point out that post / repost those images here.

A period costume entry in the 2011 Nagpur V & C Rally. Not really sure whom they wanted to look like?

Not on this context but still, I saw a good renovated wyvern in Trivandrum based on inputs from Ajay99. Restored spending nearly Rs 2.5 lacs.

Re: Period Costume Pictures in Vintage and Classic Automobile Rallies

I'm quite confident that my normal attire would qualify me for a period costume, rally or no rally.

Incidentally, when I'm married, I intend to attend a rally with my wife (and of course my ride!) with her in period costume as well, which would from the late 60s/early 70s!

Remember those old Dunhill caps and goggles?
A pair of lovely leather guantlets, tweed coat, cord trousers and knee high riding boots.
Motoring attire, inspired by the Brit way, certainly had a kind of aristocratic appeal.

Although in our case such garments would've never been worn considering our weather!
And this sounds like it would've suited pre-war sports cars more.

I was talking about bell-bottoms, long collars and 'high-heel' shoes...the works!

Platform two tone shoes and bell botts!

My dad used to have the dunhill cap cum goggles and gauntlets too. We lived in the cold hills so he could wear them. Mum used to have a car coat and a knee rug warmer. Old Fiat 1100 and then Mark2 Ambassador. Plus some old jeep or other always. The jeeps used to be canvas topped and hence very cold indeed inside.

Motoring about in those days was fun. The smell of the road, eucalyptus leaves, a little garnish of old leather, oil and petrol fumes and that very typical carburretted engine 'car smell'. Very evocative indeed! Now everything is very clinical and predictable and boring!

Another one from a recent rally picture album. The airgun attracts attention here on the ground, but is a repellant high above for the birds!

The Rally guys have goofed up the spelling of "Ariel". For the same rally its "Aerial" above, whereas its " Arial " here in the picture below ! "Arial" becomes "Gharial" (Hindi for crocodile) if " Gh " is added as prefix.
