Re: "Doing a Mysore" again - Cars of Maharaja of Mysore

Here is a picture shared by Princess Kamakshi Devi Wadiyar on the FB Page of "Memories of Maharaja Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar"

Maharaja Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar and family strike a pose in front of the Austin Princess. This car is believed to be the last Jayachamarajendra period car sold by the family. This car survives, but has not been to any event for many years.

Mr. Devdas Hegde replied to me as below
Quote:
There were two cars in Mysore Palace, same model, Buick 8 Century 1938. Alloted,to Dewan of Mysore, Amin IL Mulk Sir Mirza M Ismail, and another Buick 8 Limited 7 Seater, for the personal use for Her Majesty.

Both cars were purchased By us . We lost the first car in an accident with Tata truck, in 1962 .

Second one was used by us for a long time . We altered the petrol 8 cylinder engine to a Perkins P6 Diesel, in 1964. The engine trouble of pinion milling boring occurred every 3500 Miles . So we Sold that car in 1972

Re: "Doing a Mysore" again - Cars of Maharaja of Mysore

Thanks to Facebook we get to see another car. This time a Mercedes W110 First Series is seen at Bangalore Palace. This should be much later, probably post 1970's

I think the photo is pre 1970, because the car still has the titular plate and also the flag.So it must have been before the titles of the maharajahs were abolished

Re: "Doing a Mysore" again - Cars of Maharaja of Mysore

Unsure if this was posted earlier as well. What is the car in the foreground? The car behind I assume is a Silver Ghost - over to the experts to identify which one.

The car in front is PERHAPS this electric car

The Silver Ghost at the rear should be 57YB, based on this picture taken the same day and published Jan 1927.

Re: "Doing a Mysore" again - Cars of Maharaja of Mysore

This outstanding car belonged to a Mysore Prince. Not owned by the Maharaja, but the extended family. Here are two pictures of the car in Mysore

Identified by Travancore as a 1928 Minerva 32CV with a 5 seat collapsible body by Vanden Plas.

Features included a instantly detachable tool box. It had a very unusual fitting above the parking light. The round red ball was a direction signal.

The car was brown in colour with brown leather.

This picture shared by my friend, where the car is seen at his grandfather's house, in Mysore

What as wonderful car and rightfully deserves to be in this thread.

Lovely car, Subbaiah! Here is the identical sister car, except for wheel discs.

Re: "Doing a Mysore" again - Cars of Maharaja of Mysore

I just realized that my 1947 Daimler DB18 was missing in this thread Better late than never! Though part of the Mysore Garage, probably too small for the Maharaja. We understand this car was used by the Maharani.

While the Maharaja is known to have three DE36's, two of which fortunately survive. The third DE36 is too far gone, even for a project car. We are aware of two surviving DE27's, but not sure how many were actually there under Mysore ownership. My car is probably the only one DB18 in the Mysore Garage and happy that the car is with me.

Travancore has shared this article from 1955 which records a Daimler DB18 up for sales along with other Mysore cars. The car was not sold
"Doing a Mysore" again - Cars of Maharaja of Mysore-3.jpg

My close friend from the Mysore family, shared with me a video of the Mysore Cars, which probably is around the same period. Guess what, we get the see a fleeting glimpse of the Daimler DB18 and easily recognizable by its grill, single fog light and colour combination!
"Doing a Mysore" again - Cars of Maharaja of Mysore-4.jpg

The car was was bought in 1957 by his classmate from Maharaja's college, Mr. K N Srinivasan. Probably this is how the car was when purchased. Note the single fog light
"Doing a Mysore" again - Cars of Maharaja of Mysore-2.jpg

K N Srinivasan is seen in front of the car, probably in Cubbon Park.
"Doing a Mysore" again - Cars of Maharaja of Mysore-7.jpg

This painting was done by K S Raman, who inherited the car from his father K N Srinivasan. Probably done in the 1980's with the Mysore Maharaja's summer palace at Bangalore as the background, to commemorate the Mysore connection. Note the single fog light.
"Doing a Mysore" again - Cars of Maharaja of Mysore-1.jpg

Here is a picture of the car with K S Raman, who added the matching Lucas fog light at some point
"Doing a Mysore" again - Cars of Maharaja of Mysore-5.jpg

The Daimler historian Brian Smith's book, "Daimler Days Vol 3", features few of the Indian Daimlers. My car features in the book.
