Re: The Statesman Concourse - Jan. 9th 2011 - Kolkata

Again I was only able to be at the Rally in the morning and missed the Flag Off and the great commentary. Never seen the Army stadium and grounds so well turned out with the Army suited and booted. The entertainment was outstanding best ever.

There weren't as many new big Flashy cars this year which is always a treat to see BUT there were so many affordable drivable cars there that is the back bone our our "Movement"

Re: The Statesman Concourse - Jan. 9th 2011 - Kolkata

The grotesque old "sons of the soil" cars are a grim reminder of the glorious past of Kolkata. It was a major trading centre and the industrialists paradise much like Mumbai and most of the old time industrialist tycoons like the Birlas,Mittals,Goenkas,Poddars and many more had their bases in Kolkata.Even the Tatas had major business interests in Kolkata, as it was the nearest metro from one of their oldest business ventures, M/s Tata Steel and Locomotives.
Apart from this, many old time Bengali families too owned exotic automobiles.Long before Mumbai became the Bollywood hub centre,Kolkata was also a hub for Hindi movies and music. The New Theatres was located here. Prithiviraj Kapoor, K.L. Saigal, Pankaj Mullick among many others started their careers with The New Theatres, Kolkata and later shifted their base to Mumbai in the early 1940's.

Nice, really nice pictures, thanks all !

The Austin with the 'rear wheel arch cover' looks really special - never seen one like that.

Are many of the hood ornaments after-market ? The Gnome-like figure on the Ford, a Swan here, an Eagle there, for example - many look like whimsical additions- nice, though .

I think they all are.

My all time favourite is the 1919 Ace, unfortunately not here as it is used quite regularly to drive to work and I heard that the engine needs some repair.

Here's a few of the more interesting hood ordainments.

Hi Super Select,

That eagle mascot on the Crossley may be the official mascot for the Jodhpur Royal garages, as I recall the Jodhpur fleet of cars all having these. Anybody have any more info on this as in could the Crossley have once been a Jodhpur car?

Regards
Prithvi

Re: The Statesman Concourse - Jan. 9th 2011 - Kolkata

Hello Everyone,

Seems like everyone else has covered all the cars that had come to the rally this year. Here is a list of cars that had been entered this year. I will upload a set of photographs i took at the rally, soon.

One thing i must say, the boom the vintage section on team bhp had over the past couple of years seems to have faded away now. People seem to have lost interest in posting pictures and asking others. Its more like people are posting so let them post and we will read and sit back and have a good laugh after that.

Hope the mods and the gurus of this section don't hammer me for this post of mine.

Cheers

Indrojit

Thank you for sharing this vital information and concept of the front suspension of the Skoda. I learnt something new from you today.

The Messerschmitt is not new in the Kolkata rally's. I think last year we hardly took pictures of the cars on the main day of the rally so might have missed it out or probably last year the car was not entered.

The MGA is also another old car in the Kolkata rally's. It used to belong to Late. Mr. Shashi Kanoria first and then changed hands i don't know how many times and came to Mr. Gautam Mukherjee, he restored it and entered it in the rally a few times and then sold the car again to Late. Mr. Shashi Kanoria and he restored it to its present condition. This car was entered last year as well. I am not sure about the year before that as i didn't attend the rally that year.

Sir any idea what are the cars in his Stable ? I had once started a thread hoping to get to know the cars in his stable but unfortunately not a single one contributed to the thread. I remember a Member telling me that i should not try finding out since the owner might not be happy if the privacy of the cars he has is disclosed in a public forum. I hope he doesn't mind me trying to find again about the cars owned by the person being quoted above. I Beg to get my answer this time.

I am sure you must have had lots of fun driving this car. I hope you didn't have any problems with car before or during the rally. Hope to get a ride in your friend's car sometime soon.

They USED to own a white MG as correctly described by you. The car has changed hands and has gone to another collector in Calcutta. Would also like to add that the White MG got itself a new grill last year and did away with the red one.
