Vintage car rally today

GUWAHATI, Feb 5 – A Ford Model T that featured in Sir Richard Attenborough’s award-winning Gandhi, a Ford Galaxy rode by Indira Gandhi during her Assam visit, and other vintage vehicles rode by Subhash Chandra Bose, Devakanta Baruah, RG Baruah and other stalwarts of Assam would hit the streets of Guwahati on February 6.

The vintage car rally is being organised by Assam Tourism Development Forum (ATDF), a newly formed body of stakeholders of tourism trade, and Antique Wheels of Northeast, a forum of vintage car enthusiasts. The rally is a curtain raiser to a series of programmes to promote tourism in Assam on the lines of the Hornbill Festival and the Shillong Autumn Festival.
Addressing the media here, Dipankar Baruah of ATDF said that three dozen-odd classic cars from places like Dibrugarh, Shillong, Jowai, Tezpur and Dhubri would be seen on the roads of Guwahati.
The vintage car lovers would be able to see a Chevrolet of 1020, which was owned by a zamindar family of Dhubri, a Morris 8 of 1936, a Hillman Minx of 1946, a Buick of 1947, a Plymouth Savoy of 1957, jeeps used in World War II, Wosley, Austin, Dodges, Studebaker, Volkewagen and a number of other cars, which are a part of history now.
The car expedition would be flagged off from the Nehru Stadium complex at 10 am by DGP of Assam, Sankar Barua.
“These cars have been painstakingly preserved and kept in running condition by their owners. Our motto of organising this rally is to create awareness on preserving these classic beauties for posterity. Though an annual event, the rally would be organised in Guwahati every alternate year. The rally would also be organised in other parts of the region,” Sanjeev Baruah of Antique Wheels said.
After the rally, all the cars would be displayed at the Nehru Stadium complex till sundown at a mini carnival with food stalls, children games and live band along with elephants. The owners would also be present at the venue. The rally would pass through Ulubari, Ganeshguri, Janata Bhawan Circle, RG Baruah Road, Chandmari and Guwahati Club. Two vintage motorcycles would also take part in the rally.

First Assam Vintage Car rally on February 6 By our Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, Feb 4: Assam Tourism Development Forum (ATDF), a body of stakeholders and persons connected to tourism, is organizing the first Assam Vintage Car Rally on February 6 in Guwahati. The rally is being organized in association with the Antique Wheels of North East, a forum of vintage and classic car owners in the Northeast.
Talking to newsmen here today, ATDF founder members Sanjeev Baruah, Raja Das, Yadav Doloi and others said that about 35 vintage cars, including a 1919 Ford Model T and another model of 1920, would be seen in the rally. They said that a 1904 Ford Model T car used in the famous film, Gandhi, by Director Sir Richard Attenborough in 1980 would also be seen in the rally. The four-cylinder car is owned by Honsen Lyngdoh. They said that Ford Model T was the world’s highest selling car, before the VW Beetle came along between 1908 and 1927 when the last Model T was built.
According to the ATDF members, Assam has over 200 vintage cars, and 30 them are in running state. The rally to be flagged off by Assam DGP Sankar Barua from the Nehru Stadium Complex at 10 am would follow the route –from the flag off venue and back to the same via Ulubari-Ganeshguri-Janata Bhavan Circle-Zoo Road-Chadmari-Guwahati Club.
A World War II jeep, Wosley, Austins, Dodges, Studebekar, Volkwagen, Morris, Fords, Hillman, Plymouth, Buicks etc cars dating back to 1904 would be on display in the rally, they said.

I guess most of the good cars of Assam have been sold on or not running. I always thought that Assam had more vintage car survivors. What happened to the Packard Clipper posted in the Packard Thread, has she survived?

My personal favourite however were the Jeeps and wish we still had our's in one piece. Had to sell it as scrap as the condition was too bad towards the end.

Hi San Phrangmung,

I am very glad to see your posts. i believe that North East India did have lovely cars, like Manipur Thunderbird, Sikkim Mercedes 300SC. Many cars have been sold off, but there must be some gems still waiting to be discovered. I have seen a 1930's Standard from Meghalaya go to Goa. There is ofcourse a collector in your side, featured before, and that 1920's Chevy. Tomorrow or so I will put up an Assam registered Fort T brass radiator model. Where is this now?

Here is an ASA registered Ford T. This picture, I presume was taken in Delhi around 1970. Where is this car now? Anyone recognise these people? The gent on the left should be recognised by someone active in the vintage movement in the 1970's.

You mentioned jeeps have been sold as scrap, can you let me know the place cause I am looking for low bonnet jeep.

If the loacation of your's is indeed Raipur (C.G.), there is jeep for sale in Bhanpuri (Scrap yard). Actually all the Scraping activity now takes place there and not in Moudhapara. You can see couple of more classics over there.

There is a Jeep Garage (specialist in High to low bonnet conversion) next to lalchand garage in Pachpedi naka, he might be of some help to you.
