Provided it is a convertible, along with Sunbeam Alpine, Fiat Spyders,
Peugeot 404 Pinin (Farina?), Triumpf Spitfire, MG B, and any more. But I would rank them on the second level, but still good sports cars to own.

The amazing Ghondal 300 SL is of course a must. Last I saw the car and H, he was in the process of restoring it. I then lost touch or haven't asked about it.

The beautiful Lancia Flaminia Zagato - my favourite classic sports car in India. Beautiful lines and an Indian record holder.

Wasif's XK120 is a lovely machine, but I thik the 300SL is number 1 with the Zagato at number 2.

If I recall the Dubash car, it is a baby Ferrari and a late 70s or even 80s car? Could someone remind me please?

Faster ....how I wish the XK would really by "my" XK !! just reading your post makes me happy.

You are right the absolute top of the heap is the Gondol 300 SL which if I am not mistaken has been fully restored and was at teh first Cartier event in all its glory.

Like I said if the Rossi Ferrari 275 GTB/C was in the county that would have topped the charts.

Then there is the Aston Martin Hyderabad which would come in probably second after the 300 SL ! what do you think.

Also if we can add "quirky" then the only NSU Sport Prinz in India will also be on the list. Went thru Hyderabad to Mumbai, does anyone know where it is ?

Then the TTR ( Chennai ) E Type V12 is also a contender for the top ten.

I think we shoudl have a seperate thread for the Top American Muscle Cars as they don't belong on a pure "sports car" thread.

My pleasure Wasif

I am not aware of the Aston in Hyderbad, is this a DB4 - I have a vague recollection or perhaps am just making it up now that my mind has been prompted? If it is then it and the 300 SL are joint first with the Lancia second. The 275 would have been top of the pops but unfortunately, that and others cars simply aren't in the game. I was in touch with B Rossi recently and saw something quite lovely at the home, relating to the Lancia - it's Bombay-Pune land record certificate. Took a picture which is around here somewhere. I think there aren't a great no., of muscle cars and classic sports around to warrant two threads so probably best to keep them togther.

Re: Classic sports cars in India (1945 - 1975)

Pics of the Alloy XK 120 from Kasli.

The 356 is as of now AWOL .....maybe even exiled who knows.

The 308 GTB you remember must have been the one that was used in those old movie ads with Pataudi posing next to it and teh car bearing the "PAT 1" plate. That was in India on Carnet then but not sure where it went. Liek I said a bit too modern to be considered a true classic

There was also Dino was with Ajit in Chennai and now I understand it has found a new home. Too modern to be counted as a "classic" sports car. I think we should restrict the list to pre seventies cars only.

The two oiginal Ford Thunderbirds also can be considered bit not the later square or the fat birds !

Not confusing the 308 GTB, that is a well known Bombay car. The Dino (308) is the car I thought was in the Dubash's custody.

A 1975 car is almost 40 years old today and includes a number of nice cars in India. If you are restrictive you will lose a number of these.

Re: Classic sports cars in India (1945 - 1975)

The Dino from Ferrari was a six cylinder car andwas never sold as a 308 it started as a 206 and went on to 246. There was a Dino 246 GT with Ajith in Chennai, I understand its sold now.

Are you refering to a Fiat Dino by any chance

And going by the title of the thread you have placed the limits at 1975 yourself. Anyting newer than 75 is really not up there with the real classic sports cars !

The technology advances had started by then and various artificual intellegnence systems started featuring on the cars ruining the purity of the driving experience as can be had on pre seventies cars

Another car to be added to the list is the Gondol XK 150 S

Afraid you aren't quite correct. The car to honour Enzo's son is indeed the Dino, but Bertone (as opposed to Pinninfarina) was responsible for the 308 GT4 Dino, this.... Ferrari GT4 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Apologies for having to correct you, but this is a big gab in knowlege for any Ferrarista! Amuch overlooked but pretty Ferrari.

OH my bad, yes this 308 Dino came later on, in my books its not that great a car compared to the original 206/246 Dinos.

Never knew there was one of these oddities in India too.

Re: Classic sports cars in India (1945 - 1975)

Not to worry Wasif, happy to share what I know.

Here's the photo from very recently I mentioned. Good to see the family stills cherishs the memory. Apparently, the car did the trip from Veer Nariman road, Bombay to Milestone Zero, Pune in 2 hours 15 minutes and 20 seconds. Quite a run even by today's standards. Curiously, the record does not mention the distance travelled accurately but just the start and finish points.

I have tried to look through for a decent picture of the car itself but only one worth putting up is black and white and there must be better pictures around, perhaps even here on this forum.

Anyway, here's the one I have. Must sort through this collection of mine at some point. Mostly slides I cannot scan.

What about various 190 SLs across the country and the XK140 and XK150s.? Hopefully all still well and in good shape. Numerous Sprites and MGs too.
