I have known petrol Accents giving single digit mileage figures.
Keeping in mind the rising petrol prices and the bad roads at your place, why don't you look at a pre-owned DI Bolero. Of course, the ride cant be compared to cars, but its economical to run and maintain and offers the basic comforts that you would expect in an entry level sedan. Potholes/bad roads/muck or rain wouldn't be an issue any more.
Looking at the current state of your M1000, honestly, I don't think its fair to expect any other car to take similar beating and yet keep up.
I advise you to use the 1000. I never drove the 1000 but if the roads are bad then I guess it will be good to have the 1000.
The Spare Parts cost on the New cars is very high.
I went for TD of Ford and was not very impressed with the quality.
The Etios most probably will handle the road just like your 1000.
The Gypsy is Very Uncomfortable.
The 550 should be good but I had driven the Invader.
I think the Corolla and the Accent should be avoided because of costly parts.
I do not like the SX4.
Scorpio and Innova are also good options.
@ jeeva: this is a small city and I don't think I'll find a good bolero here, bolero I found here are mostly in bad shape used for commercial purpose. Once even my Dad suggested bolero :)
@supercars: Scorpio and Innova are simply out of budget and also way too big. I can imagine myself going to client's place in a Scorpio and see him avoiding me thinking I'll charge a bomb :uncontrol
Right now roads are so bad, that it has damaged silencer, suspension and steering rack and everything makes noise in my car. Good thing is price of spare is cheap and I recently changed its silencer and some steering parts and it did not hurt the pocket at all. But again its a old car and as everyone is saying, I should part with it, just making my mind for doing that.
The 1000 is not a car that has a sob value which would prevent anyone from selling it. Your vehicle especially is not the one on which you need to spent time deciding between selling or not. The market value would be as you have pointed out only peanuts. Even a fairly good 5 to 6 year old M800 would be a much better car than the 1000 for the specific uses you have mentioned. So just get rid of it and go for other options as advised by many above.

@james: Thats same thing I think, I don't know but thought of Gypsy feels right for the rough road (look at pics what they have done to it) but then I might not like the drive when compared with a sedan.
I would try to find SX4 in second hand market here, btw while coming back home I went to car dealer for Corolla but found a decent looking Hyundai Accent for sale. It was a 2007 model with original alloys. Price was 2.1 Lakhs. It was evening and not much light there, so will check it out tomorrow most probably and discuss about it in used car thread. |
Im not sure about your town but in mine, noone wants a used accent! Spares arent readily available and are a bit on the higher side. It seems to be going the baleno way.
Sx4's dont really have a great resale value and thats a good thing for a prospective used car buyer. Look around and and might find a good sx4 at a good price. Talk to some used car dealers and see if you can find a car from another city but in the same state. This would greatly increased your chances of getting a good catch!
Again, i would like to stress on the fact that sx4's dont give good mileage. on the roads you transverse on, expect no more than 8kpl with the old engine and 9.5 with the vvt with 50% A/C useage.
Cheers! :thumbs up
Yesterday I visited some car dealers and mechanics searching for the cars suggested here. Also visited Maruti true Value but they only had two rusty Alto which did not look in good shape. Then I went to my trusted old mechanic for "the talk" :D about car and he looked free sitting doing nothing so we had a long chat. He told me that I should go for a Santro because it can handle bad road well, he said "santro ki body me chassis hoti hai". I don't know if this is right but then he also gave some other options or rather deals that were available with him:
Tata Indica v2 diesel
A Type 2 Honda City that is very less run around 45k Kms

All monocoques have it. No big deal. Santro suspensions are not known to be tough, but Esteem suspensions are.

Type 2 OHCs are not meant for bad roads (low GC). Forget the Indica v2 if you negotiate really bad roads; Indica suspensions need too much attention to keep them healthy.
The 1L Esteem is a pretty decent car, and if you think it can be refurbished well and serve you trouble-free for a couple of years, I'd say keep it (my parameters would include the following being in good condition: engine, gearbox, differential, bodyshell in rust-free condition - anything else, like suspension and brakes, are cheap to overhaul). OTOH, if you are looking at repair bills in excess of 20-30k INR, I'd say sell it.
Aligarh does have good mechanics who do a good repair job at reasonable costs, and Esteem/1000 vehicles & parts are widely and easily available. But how many of them have seen a Corolla? And how easily & cheaply would spares of the Corolla be available in your city?
If you must change, I'd suggest a Qualis, or even an old Scorpio with the Di engine. Both have great ability to cope with bad roads.

every car has a chassis. :D
he is partly right about the handling part, i have driven santro for a few days in rural areas of punjab on bad roads and it held well.
TATA Indica V2 might be a good option too. Type 2 Honda City is best avoidable due to low ground clearance (ask me, i own one) in the given situation.

Yes repair bill will be excess of 30k as following things are bad with my M1000:
1. Last season AC went kaput, needs compressor change.
2. Full dent paint and thus all beading and rubber stuff change
3. All four suspension change.
Aligarh does have really hot weather in may june (reaches upto 55deg inside car) and even if I get AC done, it won't cool properly with small engine this car has. So a engine swap comes in and there goes the price of fixing this car :Frustrati
Regarding coralla, yes spares will be available but I have yet to find a good second hand model here.

No options available about procuring an old working compressor from your friendly neighborhood scrap dealer?
Your friendly neighborhood garage repairs and services Corollas? Or is he more comfortable with Qualises?
There are few scrap dealer and the AC repair shop itself provide me a second hand compressor but whole thing is that the AC will still not work good. I know this because when the AC was working of this car, it struggled to cool and engine temp. would also rise up in traffic. What this car will need is a esteem engine swap.
Never seen working them with corolla but have seen premium cars getting repaired there so they must be able to do corolla as well.

Forget the engine swap. Get a 1.3L Esteem. Unless you want a bigger car...
I don't think you have mentioned how old is the car (although i know 1000 was re-badged Esteem sometime around 1995), but i might be wrong, also tried searching how many Kms you have done on this, couldn't get that info from the post.
Ideally yes, once you cross 10 years of ownership its usually time to sell the car and buy a new one, but its not a carved in stone. Our old Zen had completed ~70K Kms and 13 years of ownership still Dad kept the car as the odometer reading wasn't high, and the usage was very low, and as he said It serves the purpose.
I think you may have to scrap it or sell it to some one interested in reconditioning it with a light weight diesel engine. I think a used Bolero or Gypsy should serve you well depending on whether you prefer petrol or diesel, given the road conditions in your area.
I think Qualis will suit your requirements well. :)
I think the Qualis will come very cheap second hand. There were Two versions Petrol and Diesel.
I also think that if you get a Ford Fiesta Classic second hand; you should have a look at it as it has a Good Suspension. :)
