| Automatics under 10 Lakh OTR - A Comprehensive Guide (now with the Baleno & Ertiga) Quote:

India has always been a manual country and automatic transmissions were restricted to the ultra luxury segments. The choices in the mass market (<10L) were very restricted and even those that were available were cars with old school transmissions. But over the last ~3 years there has been a huge spurt in the automatic choices available in the mass market segments. This has been attributed to several factors. Some of them are:
So why such a thread?
Why under 10L OTR?
What this thread is not about
Transmission Technology and Terminology There are different kinds of Automatic Transmissions and there are at least two cars in the list for each one of the transmissions. Hence a quick summary on the types of transmissions
Reference: Some of the technical definitions above have been taken from this link Manual modes: In Automatics we always talk about Manual Modes (Can we shift manually if needed?). Considering Indian driving conditions and the fact that the AT options are not high performance ones (apart from a couple of them), there will be at least a few situations where a manual control on shifts is preferred. There are 2 kinds
So that covers the types of transmissions and some technical details around it. Moving on to the core topic, to start off, here is a list of all available automatic cars under 10L OTR along with some key info points about them. Note 1: before you wonder why, the GT TSI, Zest XTA and TUV300 T6+ are included since they are around or less than 10L OTR in most parts of the country. They do go above 10L in places like Bangalore. At this time, have not included the Ecosport. Note 2: prices Ex-Showroom Delhi. Taken from Carwale and/or the manufacturer Website. Latest Updates
Few key things that pop out from the above summary
A Note on Warranty's
A Note on Price Differences with equivalent manual variants

| Hopefully the above post would have given readers a good picture on the types of transmissions, the available cars and variants, and key technical specification. We Indians like maximum bang for the buck. So we are always on the look out for the maximum number of features- Especially the 'Nice to have' ones. The below table lists the most common features and their availability across all the variants listed above. Again, it may not be a fair comparison as the higher priced cars are expected to have more features. But this may not always be true. For example the Nano AMT comes with audio system with Bluetooth, 4 speakers, fog lamps etc.. Somethings that are not there in the more expensive cars. Note: The info below has been picked from the brochures. Some of the items were not clear and hence left blank. Apologize in advance for any errors. Will correct as per inputs Some facts and conclusions

| re: Automatics under 10 Lakh OTR - A Comprehensive Guide (now with the Baleno & Ertiga) Thanks Rajeev. The compilation has been put up with a great degree of diligence and patience (considering how starved we are as far as auto transmissions). And this couldn't have come at a better time for me. On one such day, amidst the sea of cars on the SCLR in Mumbai, my left leg cursed me to have put it through such drudgery for 5 years. I drive down from Navi Mumbai, which is a nice 25km drive from my office. Hence I have decided to part with my beloved Polo and opt for a AT car under 8L (haven't put enough years of experience to go any further) The predicament is;
My only option within 8L can be the Ford Figo hatchback, if only someone nice at the Ford management blesses us with one. |

BHPian | re: Automatics under 10 Lakh OTR - A Comprehensive Guide (now with the Baleno & Ertiga) Thank you Rajeev for excellent compilation of automatics under 10 lakh OTR. Appreciate the effort in compiling the features, ownership report, feedback observations from owner / official review . This has come at the right time where booking for automatic transmission is on the rise and the worsening traffic situation in cities. Would it be correct to say, from performance perspective, the order of automatic transmission type will be DSG / DCT -> CVT -> AMT -> Torque Converter? |

| re: Automatics under 10 Lakh OTR - A Comprehensive Guide (now with the Baleno & Ertiga) Great effort Rajeevraj! Few things that I noticed during my search for an automatic These are few great opportunities that's there for the taking 1) No Diesel automatic 2) No automatic in base variant 3) No manufacturer backs up their auto boxes with a long warranty (Expect Ford ) Big blunder by Volkswagen by not giving an option of paddle shifters, how silly! Hyundai has the arsenal in both diesel and petrol AT gearbox, but surprisingly doesn't equip the 'Elite' i20 with an automatic! And they market it as premium! The biggest jokers are Tata, they have the AMT for Nano and Zest, but not for Bolt, I would to love to meet the brains behind this! You can forgive all but not MSIL, when the Dzire gets the AT, Swift doesn't deserve it! What was the rationale? I wish if there were a few people with common sense. |

And that's my biggest fear friend. As a person who's looking for an able and sprightly hatchback that can also be comfortable for the family and looking forward to the Figo hatchback, I can see the manufacturers not providing the AT in the hatchback, but give it to their derived CS.

| re: Automatics under 10 Lakh OTR - A Comprehensive Guide (now with the Baleno & Ertiga) Excellent thread here. Covered each and every segment. ATs a increasing in popularity due to the convenience they offer. Acceptance of ATs in the Indian market started majorly due to the ultra efficient Celerio. (Read as AMT technology) When AMT is brought to India by MSIL, you know that the market is going to accept it more easily than with any other manufacturer bringing it. The AMT revolution will get manufacturers to get ATs (mostly not AMTs) in higher segment cars when the owners decide to upgrade. The XUV 500 AT continues to be the most elusive. I just hope that the XUV AT comes in time, not when the product will be too old.

Overall I think 6 Speed TC based gearboxes will be better performers than AMT and CVT boxes. Quote:
Thanks for pointing out the ownership reports in the official thread. There can be a lot of mini ownership reports exist in the official review thread. Could not scan the threads to that level of detail. Maybe along with the official review thread, we should have a unofficial review/initial ownership report thread where folks who cannot/do not want to write a dedicated detailed review can write mini reviews/ experiences.

| re: Automatics under 10 Lakh OTR - A Comprehensive Guide (now with the Baleno & Ertiga) Nice compilation there Rajeev! I am out looking to buy a new or used AT and not finding enough time to research as well as decide. Given that the list includes Polo and Jazz, I'd have loved to see the City and Ecosport there as their ex-showroom are well within 10l in Delhi/Gurgaon and someone looking at the Polo/Jazz might want to have a peep at the latter too. But ofcourse, they jump right over the pricing fence and you are very correct in keeping them there! Given that ATs are being bought at a premium even at 4-8 lakhs, I am sure we should soon enough see them on base models of the C-segmenters! Last edited by modisan : 9th September 2015 at 15:38.
