Updates (As of December 22nd 2015)

The thread has been updated with following details
  • Wagon R and Celerio both get optional ABS and Airbags across variants
  • Ritz has been discontinued and no is longer available
Follow-up thread for the 10 - 17 lakh price bracket - link

India has always been a manual country and automatic transmissions were restricted to the ultra luxury segments. The choices in the mass market (<10L) were very restricted and even those that were available were cars with old school transmissions. But over the last ~3 years there has been a huge spurt in the automatic choices available in the mass market segments.

This has been attributed to several factors. Some of them are:
  • General increase in awareness among the buyers
  • Increasing congestion and traffic in our cities
  • Big manufacturers like Maruti and Tata embracing AMT technology which addresses 2 major concerns with Automatics: Cost and Fuel Efficiency.

So why such a thread?
  • We are in a situation where there are a large number of choices spanning manufacturers, segments and technologies.
  • Many manufacturers do not market the AT variants. So there is a general lack of awareness on the different options and more importantly the feature set
  • A lot of potential buyers of Automatics have the AT as the primary criteria and are willing to go up and down the price range.
  • We have few threads that have discussions on specific cars/sets of cars. But because of the close pricing and general flexibility of the buyers, the discussions spill over to other cars not part of the initial discussion.
  • The idea here is to consolidate all information into one place so that a potential buyer can have one reference thread for all data on Automatic transmission cars that can be bought for under 10 L OTR.

Why under 10L OTR?
  • This is where there has been the maximum churn and this is where you have a lot of options spanning segments and AT types.
  • This is the mass market. A lot of buyers (especially those looking for a 2nd car) will stick to this range. Most of these buyers have a reasonably flexible budget and a lot of cars can fall in and out.

What this thread is not about
  • This is not intended to be a comparison. It is a reference guide.
  • Will not go into in depth details of each car. We have official reviews and ownership reports for that. Key info pertaining to AT may be reproduced here.

Transmission Technology and Terminology
There are different kinds of Automatic Transmissions and there are at least two cars in the list for each one of the transmissions. Hence a quick summary on the types of transmissions
  • Torque Converter (TC): Also referred to as the conventional automatic transmission. Such automatics use a torque converter to transfer power from the engine to the transmission. There are very few parts that can wear in conventional automatic gearboxes, so a well-maintained one is very reliable. On the down side, gear shifts can be on the slower side and fuel efficiency is average. The earliest mass market automatics in India used such conventional 2/3 speed TC based transmissions. These were expensive and guzzled fuels and played a major role in building a negative perception about automatics in India.
  • Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT): Rather than sets of gears, CVTs use a belt that runs between two variable-diameter pulleys to give a wide range of ratios and a smooth transition between them. In automotive applications, some CVTs use a fluid-filled torque converter (as with a conventional automatic) to transfer power from the engine to the transmission, others a clutch similar to that used for a manual transmission, but with automatic activation (there is no clutch pedal). The advantage of a CVT is that the engine can be kept at its most efficient speed while the transmission adjusts to changes in load or road speed. Under brisk acceleration, for example, the engine revs up to where it produces the most power and is held there as the transmission constantly adjusts to the increasing speed of the car. This also gives rise to the infamous 'Rubber Band effect of CVT's'. Manufacturers like Honda have tried to overcome this by providing fixed virtual gear ratios in their CVT's which help mask the rubber band effect.

  • Automated Manual Transmission/Auto Gear Shift (AMT/AGS/Easy Shift): An automated manual is exactly what it says – a regular manual gearbox with a normal mechanical clutch, but one that’s operated entirely electronically; there’s no clutch pedal. When one of these gearboxes changes gear, the car automatically disengages drive, switches to the desired gear, and then re-engages drive – all without you doing a thing.
It sounds like a perfect solution, especially as it’s usually more efficient than a traditional automatic set-up, but it has two major downsides: speed and smoothness. AMT systems are actually on the way out in man developed markets, but Maruti Suzuki felt that it was something perfect for India since it eliminated 2 of our major concerns with automatics-Price and efficiency. And they were right, AMT has proved to be hugely popular and other manufacturers are jumping into the fray with AMT options in the mass segments.

  • Dual Clutch gearbox (DSG/ DCT): A dual-clutch automatic gearbox has, as its name suggests, two clutches. One clutch controls odd-numbered gears, and the other controls even-numbered gears. As you accelerate, the gearbox lines up the next and previous gears on the clutch that isn’t in use, ready for any eventuality - whether you slow down or continue to accelerate. Then, when a gearchange is needed, it simply switches from one clutch to the other. The result is a very fast gearchange - most dual-clutch systems are able to change gear even more quickly than a human can with a manual gearbox. What’s more, some dual-clutch systems are more fuel efficient than the manual alternative. The problem comes when pulling away, where there can be a slight delay as the first clutch engages, and this can also make for slightly jerky progress when you’re manoeuvring at low speeds – for example, when parallel parking. It’s worth noting, too, that dual-clutch systems are rather complex, and the earliest are still only around ten years old, so their long-term reliability is not yet proven. VW's DSG and Ford's DCT are examples of dual clutch systems

Reference: Some of the technical definitions above have been taken from this link

Manual modes: In Automatics we always talk about Manual Modes (Can we shift manually if needed?). Considering Indian driving conditions and the fact that the AT options are not high performance ones (apart from a couple of them), there will be at least a few situations where a manual control on shifts is preferred. There are 2 kinds
  • Tiptronic: In this type, the driver moves into the manual mode and then shifts gears up and down manually (without a clutch of course). The system will still step in if the engine revs too high or the revs fall too low.
  • Paddleshifts: This is the better manual option. In this mode, there are +/- paddles behind the steering and can be used at any time to manually shift up/down. If there is no driver input for some time, the system goes back to fully automatic mode. This is more beneficial because you do not have to explicitly get into a manual mode using the gear shift lever.

So that covers the types of transmissions and some technical details around it.

Moving on to the core topic, to start off, here is a list of all available automatic cars under 10L OTR along with some key info points about them.

Note 1: before you wonder why, the GT TSI, Zest XTA and TUV300 T6+ are included since they are around or less than 10L OTR in most parts of the country. They do go above 10L in places like Bangalore. At this time, have not included the Ecosport.

Note 2: prices Ex-Showroom Delhi. Taken from Carwale and/or the manufacturer Website.

Automatics under 10 Lakh OTR - A Comprehensive Guide (now with the Baleno & Ertiga)-atcomparnovembersummary.jpg

Latest Updates
  • In a month after the last update, we have 3 new options- The Baleno CVT, the Ertiga AT and the Wagon R/StingRay AMT
  • The Baleno CVT comes in as a strong alternative to the Jazz. Food for thought for Hyundai.
  • With the Ertiga, we get the first 7 seater Petrol AT MPV.
  • Both the above do not come in the top variants, which is a disappointment. Good news is that Airbags and ABS are standard on both.
  • The Wagon R is one of India's favorite cars, equipping it with AMT should help increase the AT penetration a great deal.
  • Note: At the time of writing, the Wagon R AMT has not been officially launched. Hence the pricing is an approximation

Few key things that pop out from the above summary
  • We have 8 manufacturers having options in the AT space
  • Honda can be considered most AT friendly as they have an AT option in all the cars they have in this range. All have more than one variant
  • Major missing manufacturer is Toyota. One of the worlds largest car makers does not have an AT option in the mass market segments
  • Renault, and Skoda also do not have an AT presence. Skoda does not have a car under 10L.
  • The Zest and the newly launched TUV300 (lower variant) are the only diesel AT's. (This will change with the launch of the Dzire SHVS Diesel AMT).
  • Maruti has taken to AMT in a big way. With more launches coming
  • The engine, power and torque numbers are all pretty much same across most of the options. Only Ford with the Figo/Aspire and VW with the Polo GT TSI have something different

A Note on Warranty's
  • Maruti offers a 10 year 160,000 km warranty on the AMT variants of Alto and Celerio.
  • Most other have a standard 2+2 or 3+2 warranty packages that cover the gear boxes also
  • Hyundai suprisingly does not offer extended warranty on the AT variants of the Grand i10 and Xcent.

A Note on Price Differences with equivalent manual variants
  • As has always been the case, AT's command a good premium over the corresponding manual variants
  • AMT's have brought down this difference to an extent.
  • For other's the average premium is in the range of Rs 75000.
  • The Polo GT TSI expectedly commands the max premium of ~2L.
  • The Figo/Aspire, although they command a heavy premium is not too much above the others in spite of using a larger more powerful engine and an advanced gear box.

Note: Uploading the Excel File also for easy reference and for interested readers to do their own adjustments/analysis. ATCars_Comprehensive.xlsx

Hopefully the above post would have given readers a good picture on the types of transmissions, the available cars and variants, and key technical specification.

We Indians like maximum bang for the buck. So we are always on the look out for the maximum number of features- Especially the 'Nice to have' ones. The below table lists the most common features and their availability across all the variants listed above. Again, it may not be a fair comparison as the higher priced cars are expected to have more features. But this may not always be true. For example the Nano AMT comes with audio system with Bluetooth, 4 speakers, fog lamps etc.. Somethings that are not there in the more expensive cars.

Note: The info below has been picked from the brochures. Some of the items were not clear and hence left blank. Apologize in advance for any errors. Will correct as per inputs

Automatics under 10 Lakh OTR - A Comprehensive Guide (now with the Baleno & Ertiga)-atdetailsnovember1.jpg

Some facts and conclusions
  • Features present in majority of the cars but missing in one or two have been highlighted in red
  • Features unique to one or two cars have been highlighted in green.
  • The Brio VX(O) and the E2O are the AT cars you can buy with a full AVN System.
  • The E20 is the only electric and is quite loaded with gizmos.
  • The Zest XTA is the only one with Projectors, DRL's and 8 speakers.
  • The Figo/Aspire are the only cars with the Phone Dock. Zest has Smartphone Integration for Navigation
  • The Ritz is one of the most poorly equipped.
  • The cheapest car Nano comes with a lot of nice to have features not see in the more expensive cars.
  • The TUV300 has the largest Fuel Tank. The Xcent the largest boot.
  • The TUV300 is highly under equipped compared to the rest. On the plus side, it is the only SUV (Or SUV Like) and the only 7 seater. The first 7 seater diesel Automatic.
  • The Baleno is the first Maruti with a CVT. But being a lower variant misses out on most of the USP features.
  • Ertiga-The first 7 seater petrol MPV AT. A welcome move by Maruti.
  • The Wagon R and Celerio AMT sits very close to each other. Need to see how it impacts Celerio AMT Sales

A further drill down into key features of each car in the list:

The Team-BHP Official Review: Tata Nano AMT

What owners have to say
  • From comments on the review thread, most owners are generally happy with the car for in city use.
  • Driving mostly in the S mode seems to be the preferred approach to get better performance.
  • Brakes have been reported as a concern by almost all. But the general consensus is that once you get used to it, it is acceptable. But keep a safe distance from other vehicles.
  • Many owners are a little disappointed with the FE. It is lower than previous generation. Owners are getting between 12-15 in city conditions (most reports from Bangalore)
  • Few quirks reported with the AMT behavior. Overall seems to be niggle free.
  • Waiting period seems to be on the higher side. ~3 months. Unclear if this is due to demand or supply issues with the AMT box.
  • Surprisingly there is no detailed owner review thread yet for Nano AMT.

Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 AGS

Automatics under 10 Lakh OTR - A Comprehensive Guide (now with the Baleno & Ertiga)-altogear.jpg

The Team-Bhp Official Review: Alto K10

Ownership Reports:

Other Observations:
  • Very little discussion happening in the Alto K10 Official Thread (Compared to Nano).
  • The Nano AMT launch seems to have hit the prospects of the K10 AMT.
  • General confusion among buyers on whether to put a little extra and go for the Celerio or save money and go for the Nano. The K10 AMT seems to be stuck in a no mans land.
  • Lack of a proper USP and also equipment compared to both Nano and Celerio seems to be impacting the Alto K10

Maruti Suzuki Celerio AGS

Automatics under 10 Lakh OTR - A Comprehensive Guide (now with the Baleno & Ertiga)-maruticelerio18gear.jpg

The Team-Bhp Official Review: Maruti Suzuki Celerio

Other observations/owner feedback
  • The car that started the AMT revolution in India
  • A year back was India's cheapest Automatic. This distinction was first taken by the K10 AMT and then by the Nano.
  • 50% of Celerio sales are said to be the AMT variant
  • ABS and airbags are available as optional equipment across all variants.
  • No detailed ownership report available. Not much discussion in the official thread. Pointer that it is not a preferred option in the team-bhp community.

Maruti Ritz AT

Automatics under 10 Lakh OTR - A Comprehensive Guide (now with the Baleno & Ertiga)-ritz.jpg

Automatics under 10 Lakh OTR - A Comprehensive Guide (now with the Baleno & Ertiga)-ritz-gear.jpg

Observations/Feedback
  • One of the lesser known AT offerings from Maruti.
  • Rumors that it will be discontinued soon since Maruti is focusing on AMT's.
  • Considered by some customers, but in general there are no TD vehicles available at dealerships.
  • Probably not a sensible buy at this time considering the technology, features and the price ( unless you really love the Ritz)
  • Could not find an official review or any Owner reviews/comments
  • Few online reviews out there. Here is a Link to the Autocar review
  • A summary from the review below
  • The car has been discontinued and is no longer available.

Quote:
The four-speed auto ‘box is similar to the one in the Swift Dzire and A-star, and as a daily commuter, the Ritz auto is a likeable car. It takes off eagerly from a standstill and even part-throttle responses are good. Thanks to this, you can easily keep up with other cars in traffic and it never feels underpowered. However, as you press on, there is a bit of a delay in the response and it takes time for the ’box to drop down to a suitable gear. As the transmission has only four speeds, the gear ratios are quite tall. So every time the gearbox shifts to a lower gear it is usually at a very high engine rpm and consequently the engine also becomes very noisy.
The Mahindra E20

Automatics under 10 Lakh OTR - A Comprehensive Guide (now with the Baleno & Ertiga)-mahindrarevae2o08gear.jpg

Team-Bhp Official Review.

Ownership Reports
Other Feedback/Inputs
  • Technically this is not an Automatic. There is no transmission or gears. Mahindra has positioned it (Along with an AT kind gear lever) to ensue customer familiarity.
  • Pricing is the biggest concern with this. With the on and off subsidies and discounts causing heartburn to the initial owners.
  • A good amount of owner feedback in the official review thread
  • Feedback ranges from positive to neutral to negative.
  • Few of the initial buyers bought this as there was no real small AT car. Same folks would not buy this today.
  • For the price, owners not happy with interior quality. Lot of complaints of rattles and part issues.
  • The range and lack of public charging points make it very impractical apart from specific use cases.
  • The peak torque right from standstill makes it a peppy car.
  • Owners proud of the small contribution to a cleaner environment.

Ownership Reports
Bhpian superbhikari's Ownership Report

Other Feedback/Observations:
  • For such a feature loaded car, missing safety features are a glaring omission. Several folks looking at the Grand i10 could not believe that it had things like push button start and rear AC vents, but no Airbags
  • 4-Speed AT, but comes with Tiptronic. Owners happy with the quality of shifts and general drivability
  • Fuel Efficiency is a concern with typical single digit numbers in city.
  • The car of choice for customers not worried about the missing safety features especially for in city use.

Honda Brio

Ownership Reviews

Observations/Owner feedback
  • An AT option that appears complete. Safety features, 5 Speed Gear Box, a peppy engine, planted manners. One of the more preferred AT options especially in this community. Validated by the number of ownership comments and threads in the forum
  • Overall usage pattern seems to be mostly in city. Lack of paddles/tiptronic means that there is an additional reliance on the D3/2 modes in several situations.
  • In general less equipped compared to immediate competition. Recent updates have improved things a bit. VX(O) Variant in AT means this is the only option with a proper AVN system
  • FE is a general concern. Several instances of single digit numbers in city driving.
  • Dealer response to the Brio AT has been laid-back. Several owners had to wait long and also do multiple follow ups to get the car.
  • With Honda focusing more on the City/Jazz/Amaze, future of the Brio looks bleak. Something to keep in mind if this is the car of choice.

Nissan Micra CVT

Ownership Reviews

Bhpian rajeshsundaram's Micra CVT Review

Other feedback/Inputs
  • Another one of the top choices on paper for an in city AT. The cheapest CVT.
  • Super convenient in City. No other gear box can match the CVT smoothness.
  • Nissan's iffy after sales and smaller dealer network prevent this car from getting the attention/sales it deserves. Lot of comments on people liking the car and then backing of due to the Nissan brand perception.
  • Unlike the Brio and Grand i10, the Micra CVT returns a decent 12-13 kmpl in city driving conditions.
  • Nissan recently launched the XL CVT variant.
  • Rubber Band effect is talked about. But within city not much of a concern.

Maruti Dzire

Ownership Reports

Bhpian Diesel Lover's Dzire AT Review

Other input/Feedback
  • Poorly equipped compared to most other cars across segments.
  • With Maruti's focus on AMT and considering that the Dzire SHVS AMT has been spotted testing, it will only be a matter of time before the 4 Speed AT is discontinued.
  • Has never been a popular AT car primarily due to its steep price. Apart from the official review and one ownership review, hardly any discussion about it.
  • All compact sedans in the segment have an AT variant now and all are superior to Dzire in most aspects. So buying a Petrol Dzire AT does not make much sense.
  • The upcoming SHVS Diesel AMT will be a game changer.

Honda Amaze

Automatics under 10 Lakh OTR - A Comprehensive Guide (now with the Baleno & Ertiga)-hondabrioautomaticgear.jpg

No Official Review of the Amaze AT since it is a sedan version of the Brio. The Brio AT's review will hold good for the Amaze also.

Ownership Reviews
  • Senior-Bhpian r_nairtvm's Ownership Review. The only ownership report available.

Other inputs/feedback
  • The first real competitor to the Dzire AT in the compact sedan space.
  • Had never became a popular AT option even when there was minimal competition. Now with all the compact sedans having AT options, the Amaze is even lower in priority.
  • From a AT perspective faced the challenge of positioning. Only those who wanted the boot space would need to go for the Amaze. Otherwise you get the fully loaded Brio AT at a price cheaper than the Amaze and fact is that it is essentially the same car.
  • With the launch of the Jazz at almost the same price as Amaze, the attention to the Amaze AT is set to fall further.
  • Brio AT is available in VX(O) but Amaze is not. Top variant is VX.
  • The few owners who have the Amaze AT have no cause for complaints.
  • Dealership experience buying the Amaze has been reported to be poor (Personally experienced this also. Was discouraged from going for the Amaze AT)

Team-Bhp Official Review

Ownership Reviews
Other inputs/Feedback
  • New AT kid on the block. Considered a top choice in the AT segment.
  • Initial numbers from Honda indicated a large percent of booking for the Automatic.
  • The fact that the chief competitor of the Jazz-The Elite i20 does not have an AT variant is working hugely in favor of the Jazz.
  • Uses the CVT box seen in the City. General feedback is that it is better than the CVT seen on the Micra.
  • The only car under 10L equipped with Paddle Shifts (in V variant)
  • As expected from CVT's, great for light foot city commuting, not too great for the highway. Expect to use the paddles a lot.
  • No top end VX CVT version a major point of discontent for customers. Since the V CVT misses on the major USP of the Jazz-Magic Seats.
  • Considered a little on the expensive side by many.

Team-Bhp Official Review

Ownership Reviews
  • None for the Automatic so far

Other inputs/Feedback
  • The odd man out in the bunch. 1 year after launch still the only Diesel AT under 10L.
  • A great car, voted Team-Bhp car of the ear 2014. Several USP's apart from the diesel AT badge. Still an average seller.
  • Initially launched only in the mid XMA variant. Later based on feedback, launched in the top end XTA variant.
  • As with the Nano, delays in delivery of AMT variants reported by several members.
  • The Tata AMT with the benefit of the diesel torque makes it more drivable than the AMT in the Celerio.
  • The First Mover advantage of over a year for the Diesel AMT has not really helped Tata much with respect to sales. The Dzire Diesel SHVS AMT launch can kill the Zest AMT.

Ownership Reviews
Other inputs/feedback
  • One of the more popular Compact Sedan AT's
  • Fortunately Hyundai did not repeat the mistake it did with the Grand i10. The Xcent comes with Airbags and ABS.
  • In spite of a 4 speed AT, owners are pretty satisfied with the highway performance
  • This excellent travelogue by Bhpian Secreteriat is a wonderful testimonial to this cars performance and reliability. http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/travel...n-sisters.html
  • Will face a lot of competition from the Aspire and the Jazz.

Ownership Reviews
  • Just launched. No dedicated ownership reviews out yet. Personal TD report can be found here

Other inputs/feedback
  • A good thread with the Technical Overview of the DCT here
  • Only 1.5L Engine in the <10L segment.
  • Dual Clutch Transmission. A great alternative for a good performing AT without the constraints of the Polo GT TSI.
  • Not an outright performer like the GT TSI. But better than the other alternatives.
  • Aggressive Pricing and feature set makes everything else look over priced. Has the potential to be another major winner for Ford.
  • Disappointment due to Ford not releasing the AT in the top spec variant with 6 Airbags.
  • Lacks the typical solid Ford build.

Polo GT TSI

Team-Bhp Official Review

Ownership Reviews: Way too many to list. Few examples
Other inputs/feedback
  • Arguably the most popular automatic in this forum and outside also.
  • In spite of its constraints, DSG worries and price, a hugely popular car. VW themselves have been surprised by the response to this car.
  • The car responsible for bringing some respectability to the AT segment in India.
  • Only car to get Cruise Control.
  • The car that converted a lot of enthusiasts and non enthusiasts (including myself) to believers in AT.
  • The only Turbo Petrol car this side of 10L.
  • As the ownership threads show, one of the most mod friendly cars around. Every owners seems to have a new experience to share. As indicated by the ownership reports.
  • Constraints of the Polo by itself (Poor back seat space, DSG Reliability concerns, VW's iffy After Sales) has caused several potential buyers to look away-In spite of the heart wanting the car.
  • Faces competition from the Aspire AT and the upcoming Punto Evo Abarth (Manual)

Other observations/Feedback
  • Has created quite a buzz. The cheapest AT SUV. T6+ AMT under 10L OTR in most places. Top version available ~11L OTR in lot of places.
  • The first and cheapest 7 seater AT SUV
  • That gearbox lever is unlike anything seen before. A/M at one position. Looks like a paddle shift on the stick.
  • Reasonably well loaded feature set.
  • Need to await official and ownership TD reports and reviews to see if Mahindra have a winner on their hands.

Ownership Reviews

Other observations/Feedback

  • The latest entrant in the AT hatch space.
  • Like the Aspire, uses the 1.5L engine and DCT gearbox.
  • An AT hatch that is the complete package- A powerful engine, modern dual clutch gear box, well loaded with features, reliable and above all great VFM.
  • No AT in the Titanium+ variant is a downer.
  • Will need to see how the market reacts and how Ford markets the Figo AT.

Other observations/Feedback
  • Good move by Maruti to equip the Baleno with a CVT as opposed to the 4 speed AT. Taking on the Jazz CVT head on.
  • Spacious car with premium features. Already on the way to become a blockbuster.
  • CVT in the Delta variant (Top-2) a huge disappointment. Considering the pricing, even a top end CVT would have been priced competitively.
  • Nothing really unique in the Delta Variant. Should sell well being a Maruti and due to the competitive pricing. Cheaper than the Jazz.
  • TD reports indicate that it is a suited to city car. Not too much on the highway.
  • GT TSI and Ford DCT will remain the choice for those looking for a performing AT. For the vast majority, it will be a toss up between the Baleno and the Jazz.
  • Hyundai will need to equip the i20 Elite with an AT soon. Otherwise may start losing numbers.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga

Other observations/Feedback
  • Good move from Maruti. A 7 seater Petrol AT. Considering the Ertiga sells well, there will be takers for the AT variant.
  • 4 Speed TC based AT used in the other Maruti Cars. Not surprising. Maybe the AMT would have been a better choice?
  • Not available in the top variant which is a disappointment. Gets Airbags and ABS, which is a rarity for Maruti's AT offerings.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R/Stingray

Other observations/Feedback
  • A welcome move from Maruti. Considering that the Wagon R is one of India's favorite cars, an AMT variant can really help increase AT penetration.
  • ABS and airbags are available as optional equipment across all variants.

Re: Automatics under 10 Lakh OTR- A Comprehensive guide

The Automatic Space in India is continuously evolving. Before signing off, a quick look at what we can expect in this space in the immediate future (in 2015)
  • The last month has been a busy one in the AT space. The Figo DCT, TUV AMT, Baleno CVT, Ertiga AT and the Wagon R AMT.
  • The biggest launch would be the Dzire Diesel SHVS AMT (has been spotted testing). India's top selling car along with the new SHVS technology and an AT box is going to be a game changer. Expected to be the most fuel efficient car in India once launched. Who would have thought that an Automatic can get the tag of India's most fuel efficient car.
  • Renault is expected to launch the Kwid AMT. Not part of the initial launch. But expected to come.
  • No plans from Toyota as yet. Pretty lethargic of them.
  • No hint of an AT from General Motors.
  • Fiat also does not have an AT option. The upcoming Punto Evo Abarth will be manual only
  • Although Hyundai have good options, they have not really given too much importance to their AT offerings, Hyundai bringing in more modern AT boxes and/or diesel AT's can really help explode the market.
  • Diesel AT choices still limited. Looking forward for Maruti to mate the AMT with the Swift and Dzire.

Some other related threads with some good discussions.

Hope this compilation will help prospective buyers understand the different options and feature sets and help make an informed decision. Thank you for reading.

Good compilation. The Ritz AT and the DZire AT are among the rare & almost unknown variants. I came to know of these two very recently. One DZire AT TD vehicle was recently on sale in Bangalore.

re: Automatics under 10 Lakh OTR - A Comprehensive Guide (now with the Baleno & Ertiga)

Thanks Rajeev. The compilation has been put up with a great degree of diligence and patience (considering how starved we are as far as auto transmissions). And this couldn't have come at a better time for me.

On one such day, amidst the sea of cars on the SCLR in Mumbai, my left leg cursed me to have put it through such drudgery for 5 years. I drive down from Navi Mumbai, which is a nice 25km drive from my office. Hence I have decided to part with my beloved Polo and opt for a AT car under 8L (haven't put enough years of experience to go any further)

The predicament is;
  • I can go for the GT TSI, but for the price (and can't see the same dashboard again)
  • The Jazz SV CVT doesn't have a rear wipe-wash (very important during the Mumbai monsoon), and the V CVT is again expensive (notwithstanding the waiting period)
  • The Elite i20 isn't so elite after all. No ATs here.
  • Grand i10 AT does not have the safety features that should be mandatory (that discussion for some other day).

My only option within 8L can be the Ford Figo hatchback, if only someone nice at the Ford management blesses us with one.

re: Automatics under 10 Lakh OTR - A Comprehensive Guide (now with the Baleno & Ertiga)

Thank you Rajeev for excellent compilation of automatics under 10 lakh OTR. Appreciate the effort in compiling the features, ownership report, feedback observations from owner / official review .

This has come at the right time where booking for automatic transmission is on the rise and the worsening traffic situation in cities.

Would it be correct to say, from performance perspective, the order of automatic transmission type will be DSG / DCT -> CVT -> AMT -> Torque Converter?

re: Automatics under 10 Lakh OTR - A Comprehensive Guide (now with the Baleno & Ertiga)

Great effort Rajeevraj!
Few things that I noticed during my search for an automatic
These are few great opportunities that's there for the taking
1) No Diesel automatic
2) No automatic in base variant
3) No manufacturer backs up their auto boxes with a long warranty (Expect Ford )
Big blunder by Volkswagen by not giving an option of paddle shifters, how silly!
Hyundai has the arsenal in both diesel and petrol AT gearbox, but surprisingly doesn't equip the 'Elite' i20 with an automatic! And they market it as premium!
The biggest jokers are Tata, they have the AMT for Nano and Zest, but not for Bolt, I would to love to meet the brains behind this!
You can forgive all but not MSIL, when the Dzire gets the AT, Swift doesn't deserve it! What was the rationale?
I wish if there were a few people with common sense.

And that's my biggest fear friend. As a person who's looking for an able and sprightly hatchback that can also be comfortable for the family and looking forward to the Figo hatchback, I can see the manufacturers not providing the AT in the hatchback, but give it to their derived CS.

re: Automatics under 10 Lakh OTR - A Comprehensive Guide (now with the Baleno & Ertiga)

Excellent thread here.
Covered each and every segment.

ATs a increasing in popularity due to the convenience they offer. Acceptance of ATs in the Indian market started majorly due to the ultra efficient Celerio. (Read as AMT technology)
When AMT is brought to India by MSIL, you know that the market is going to accept it more easily than with any other manufacturer bringing it.

The AMT revolution will get manufacturers to get ATs (mostly not AMTs) in higher segment cars when the owners decide to upgrade.

The XUV 500 AT continues to be the most elusive. I just hope that the XUV AT comes in time, not when the product will be too old.
  • I didn't know Ritz AT was sold in India.
  • Toyota isn't really interested in selling Etios/Liva AT. They have a good range of ATs in other models. (Except Innova)
  • Honda mobilio doesn't have AT option even though the transmission is ready
  • Fords ATs seems to be really good gearboxes
  • "VW" and "DSG failures" come together in too many sentences

Re: Automatics under 10 Lakh OTR- A Comprehensive guide

Excellent compilation but for one miss.

I think we have a few owners who need to write up about their Zest AMT diesel ownership experience.

Thank You. I am pretty sure that Ford will equip the Figo with the AT. There was this article way back in March with scoop pictures of the AT Figo (Note: It is unclear whether the spyshot is actually that of the Figo or is it the Figo Aspire). Considering they pulled a surprise by providing the Aspire with a 1.5 engine and DCT box, Won't be surprised if they do the same to the Figo. If they can price the 1.5 Aspire cheaper than the 1.2 Compact Sedans like Amaze, Xcent, they should be able to pull the same trick with the Figo.

Thank you. Performance of the AT would be closely tied to the Engine it is mated to. In this list, the above ordering may make sense. But apart from the DSG/DCT which are mated to the 1.2TSI/1.5 engines, the others are all mated to smaller engines. So would not expect a clear cut differentiation in performance.

Overall I think 6 Speed TC based gearboxes will be better performers than AMT and CVT boxes.

Thank you. I did see this ownership report, but it is of a manual Zest XT. Was looking specific for AT reviews.

Thanks for pointing out the ownership reports in the official thread. There can be a lot of mini ownership reports exist in the official review thread. Could not scan the threads to that level of detail.

Maybe along with the official review thread, we should have a unofficial review/initial ownership report thread where folks who cannot/do not want to write a dedicated detailed review can write mini reviews/ experiences.

re: Automatics under 10 Lakh OTR - A Comprehensive Guide (now with the Baleno & Ertiga)

Nice compilation there Rajeev! I am out looking to buy a new or used AT and not finding enough time to research as well as decide.

Given that the list includes Polo and Jazz, I'd have loved to see the City and Ecosport there as their ex-showroom are well within 10l in Delhi/Gurgaon and someone looking at the Polo/Jazz might want to have a peep at the latter too. But ofcourse, they jump right over the pricing fence and you are very correct in keeping them there!

Given that ATs are being bought at a premium even at 4-8 lakhs, I am sure we should soon enough see them on base models of the C-segmenters!
