The 2 door Zen, Zen Carbon/Steel. I would go for them if I can find, else a Maruti 800.

I would vote for an Esteem; an ageless wonder.

An old safari or a Zen will fit the bill nicely in addition to the ones you have mentioned.

As many people suggested above, old Honda City (something like your old VTEC) will be good enough. The owner can also take it for a spin once in a month or so.

Another option is a used Maruti Omni. Plenty of them are in the used car market and it can also be used as a utility vehicle (for hauling heavy luggage etc.)

No ambassador or anything from that era because it will quickly turn into a rust bucket and fall apart.

Call me old school but I think that diesels should be avoided because the car is going to be sparingly used. A petrol car will surely give less trouble than a diesel car at the time of cold start.

The whole bit of buying a 15 year old car is that you may not get it past the FC and also what happens if it becomes regulatory to scrap cars greater than 15 years?

I would spend a little more money maybe 50 k more and shop for a 2010 Ford Fiesta, probably might get the 1.4 exi at that price.

Alternatively, I still love the Maruti 800, nice peppy engine, extremely chuckable and a fun to drive car.

You might also find newer Chevy Beats in that price points.

The idea should be that it should be road legal until at least 2025.

If the regulations do not matter, my picks in the order of preference

Baleno, Honda City,Ford Fiesta, Ikon, Esteem, Zen.

Our parking spot would be empty soon, but I have decided to ditch the idea of getting a car and opted to go the motorcycle way.

Issue here is that, someone can just move it and use the spot, thankfully there are few very old bikes in running condition with my friends, that I can get for throwaway price. When I visit the place during any situations, I can simply move the bikes and park my car and use it as usual.

Instead of buying a four wheeler, these two things can be done simultaneously.

1. Buy a 2nd hand two wheeler and park it on the spot. As long as the spot is occupied, no one can do anything.
2. Pay a small amount to the main watchman occasionally on a regular basis, to look after the parking.

He figures that, if it's going to be parked in his compound, it might as well look nice. So, what's the most interesting car one can buy for 1 lakh?

Should be as hassle-free as possible to maintain, therefore W124s and the like are out. No Jeep or Gypsy either.

Contessa Classic?
HM Ambassador?
A neatly maintained Padmini?
An SS80 Maruti?

Thank you in advance !

Is the guy a car enthusist who wouldn't mind spending some money and time on maintaining the prospective car?

If Yes:

Ambassador - It's a classic! Get one in black!

Padmini - Another classic, choice no 2 due to personal nostalgic reasons!

If No:

Santro Xing, Wagon R or a first gen City! I would keep away from Tatas of yesteryears (Safari, Indigo etc) as they're just too much of a pain to maintain.

Is the parking covered? If yes, one can opt for classics. Else, modern cars will do fine. 800, jellybean Zen, well maintained esteem will do great. A well maintained Omni, which can haul oversized items with middle row seat removed. Or else, a clean 1.6 fiesta for cornering thrills.

I assume, he/she has got a modern car for daily use. The main purpose of this car will be to hold that particular parking slot.

How about a CJ3B or a classic?
Or maybe by paying a bit more, getting a Maruti Gypsy can be a great option! Gypsy will be reliable too!

A Jeep/Gypsy in the parking lot always has it's own charm!

Plus in-case of water logging or flood, he/she can drive out like a boss! These cars can very well do the odd jobs of carrying household luggage's too!

And who knows, after owning such a car he/she may get interested in off-roading !

True. Can’t believe I forgot the Gypsy in my list. It’s one of the coolest cars you can get under 1 lakh IMO. Reliable and hassle free too.

1. Honda City first generation (the VTEC variant may cost you a shade over a lakh)
2. Maruti Zen first generation (pre facelift)
3. Mitsubishi Lancer 1st generation
4. Maruti Suzuki Swift 1st generation (with G13B engine)
5. Hyundai GETZ 1st generation

Zen/Esteem/City

They can be maintained easily. If they break down, procuring parts and fix should be easy.

Perhaps an off topic, can we use something else to occupy parking spot
It could be fence/small garden/ flower pots/other. It makes sense to keep things simple than buy old car, run and maintain for such requirement, IMHO.
