Ciaz or Dzire (if ciaz is flashy) all the way if petrol is fine.
If Nexon isnt considered flashy, diesel manual XZ!
If a pre-worshipped might suit his image better, then marazzo

If that is the case then either Maruti WagonR or S-Presso should be his options. Can't think of anything that is comfortable but not flashy.

Re: Cheap but comfortable car for 10 - 12 lakhs | Can't be too showy

Seems like the most suitable car would be the Brezza in the entry level variant and a white shade. The car doesn't look flashy or futuristic and just the right amount of money. From the perspective of these so called clients, cars from other stable like Ford or Honda or Nissan might scream 'international' while Suzuki is 'Local'

Besides in the real world practical sense that car is robust and will give him a reliable ownership experience. Would have suggested the Ertiga too, but the length might give off a rich vibe I bet this is the first time a query of such manner has come up here.

I have two suggestions
1. A mid variant of a Hyundai Venue (will look just like a raised hatchback)
2. Renault Duster(This might look flashy)

Re: Cheap but comfortable car for 10 - 12 lakhs | Can't be too showy

Going against the opinion here but a well maintained Zest or a Bolero would be an apt choice for the following reasons:
  • Comfortable suspension for a sensitive back.
  • Lots of space, big greenhouse with large windows adds to the space.
  • Rugged, reliable build - will go to most places with broken roads, kuchcha village roads, no roads.
  • Reliable engines & mechanicals.
  • Ready availability of spares that aren't too costly, nominal service costs, large dealership / A$$ network.
  • Bolero has better ground clearance, but Zest too doesn't scrape in most places.
  • Not too costly or flashy. These are cars that customers will identify with.
  • Zest has secured a 4-star safety rating in the Global NCAP crash test.

Else, a Duster would also be worth considering. Though that may from be a segment higher.

Cheers !

Used pre-facelift S-Cross (silver grey) non flashiness and better suspension, Etios Liva, Zest, Bolero

Re: Cheap but comfortable car for 10 - 12 lakhs | Can't be too showy

I think for this person's requirements, it has to be a desi car (not necessarily a Tata or Mahindra) so as to not look flashy or give the impression of opulence, so definitely something from the Maruti stable - Dzire would fit the bill perfectly and would save him money from his 12 lakh budget as well. It would also seem aspirational and set him up well amongst his peers by easily blending with them. Next would be the Brezza, but will seem flashy in that group is my feeling. My last suggestion is the Wagon R 1.2.

Re: Cheap but comfortable car for 10 - 12 lakhs | Can't be too showy

Car has to be inconspicuous and shouldn't attract attention. Renault Duster or the Maruti Vitara Brezza in this case as they are small SUVs with comfortable ingress/egress.

If he really is open to it, I'd say the Renault Logan (and Mahindra equivalent) is a great choice if it is low mileage and in good condition.

Re: Cheap but comfortable car for 10 - 12 lakhs | Can't be too showy

Thanks a ton for the help, guys! Shortlisted Baleno, Dzire, Altroz, Amaze, Vitara Brezza & XUV300. He's checking them all out today and will close based on whichever front-passenger seat he is most comfy in. Ciaz is too big / showy for his purpose.

Marutis are at a disadvantage thanks to no diesel.

Re: Cheap but comfortable car for 10 - 12 lakhs | Can't be too showy

I would suggest the Honda WRV. Reasons-

1) Crossover, so ingress egress isn't an issue.
2) Acres of space.
3) Not too flashy, blends in the crowd easily.
4) Honda. So perfect for a normal A-B distance commuting. Won't breakdown/show any frequent niggles, diesel is very fuel efficient too.
5) City ride quality is one of the best I have seen on this side of 10 lakhs.

Other option would be Tiago. If he is fine with general Tata experience, this can be the best choice. IMO Tiago is a very sorted product, unlike the Harrier/Safaris, so he should be much safer. Tiago has all of the WRV positive's albeit, in lesser ratio.

Re: Cheap but comfortable car for 10 - 12 lakhs | Can't be too showy

Would recommend a Maruti Ciaz or a Honda City. Both comfortable vehicles, plus also the added benefit of a decent sized boot. Since you mentioned he's a Contractor, the boot would come in handy. Also, considering the ride quality of both sedans, they would be an ideal fit for site-visits etc with enough driving comfort and pleasure. Both options are also understated in the looks department, not too "flashy" at all. Hassle-free ownership as well.

Alternatively, in case he doesn't require a boot, maybe the Baleno would be a good bet, under 10 lakh.

Re: Cheap but comfortable car for 10 - 12 lakhs | Can't be too showy

As per the requirements, Dzire will be the best bet. Its one of the most comfortable cars out there. At home we have a 2014 Dzire and its very comfortable even on the back seat. Also, Dzire will save him around 3 lakhs.

Almost all cars are comfortable on front seats since the person sits almost on middle of the wheelbase, so does not feel much of any potholes/ flyover joints.

If ingress/egress is an issue (due to delicate back), best fit would be the Brezza.

Re: Cheap but comfortable car for 10 - 12 lakhs | Can't be too showy

Less flashy cars is a relative term. For a car which isn't less flashy, it should be spotted everywhere and for that, there are 4 brands and a few particular cars which I can think he'd like so I'm writing the names so that he can check them out and acquire the right one according to his taste and preference.
Brand #1- Maruti Suzuki
In India, you’ll see a Maruti parked outside every third house in your neighbourhood. Reliable cars, ownership experiences are bliss and mileage friendly cars. So any Maruti car he buys will be less flashy.
In the 12L> bracket, Brezza or S-Cross are the cars to go for. Ingress and Egress is easy and they're comfortable and good to drive.
Ciaz is a good buy in this price bracket but he'd be better off with a big car due to his back pain.

Brand#2- Honda
The WRV and the Jazz will be a great buy. Host to beautiful interiors and are comfortable.

Brand#3- Ford
Freestyle and EcoSport in particular. Build quality is top-notch and they're nicer to drive than any of the cars on the list.

Brand#4- Mahindra
XUV300 and Bolero Neo. The new Bolero Neo is a great option for everyday use and being a Mahindra will be abuse friendly. A very good option here.

Keep Revvin’
