Hi team. One of my friends is looking for a Pre Used car for his daily drive (Chennai being the city) predominantly within and outskirts of the city with daily running varying between 40~60 kms per day and occasional weekend family outings. Within his budget there are 2 shortlists : a 2019 Aura 1.2 crdi and a 2019 Freestyle 1.5 TDCi, both currently under 20K kms ODO. Kindly suggest the better option, considering the below priorities:

1. Fuel economy - extremely important
2. Performance - not at all a priority
3. Maintenance cost - better to be minimal
4. Boot space - not so important, as Boot will be a rare usage, may be once a year occasion for trip to KL.
5. Highway stability - not very important as would be a sedate driver
6. Safety ratings - not a high priority, considering the usage.

While my recommendation is for the freestyle (may be influenced by me owning an Aspire TDCi) considering the almost equivalent Fuel Economy, but a huge Fun To Drive (FTD) factor, he is currently inclined towards Aura due to a sedan'ish shape (social standing).

But i would love to understand the view of the team, as we may be missing out on some important things when being biased.

Between a Hyundai Aura 1.2 CRDi and Ford Freestyle 1.5 TDCi , I have listed which car to go for with reasons mentioned below

1. Fuel economy - extremely important: The Freestyle TDCi has an ARAI certified fuel economy of 23.8 kmpl whereas the Aura CRDi has an ARAI certified fuel economy of 25 kmpl, the difference is hardly 1.2 kmpl with the same owing to the fact that the Freestyle has a larger 1.5 litre engine against the 1.2 litre in the Aura.

2. Performance - not at all a priority: Although not a priority, the Freestyle is the better performer with 99 bhp of power and 215 nm of torque on tap as against the Aura which puts out 74 bhp of power and 190 nm of torque.

3. Maintenance cost - better to be minimal: Considering Ford's exit from the Indian Market, Hyundai would be the better choice as regards service and maintenance.

4. Boot space - not so important, as Boot will be a rare usage, may be once a year occasion for trip to KL: The Aura wins in the boot space department owing to the sedan body style and a dedicated boot with 402 litres of boot space. The freestyle has only 257 litres of boot space.

5. Highway stability - not very important as would be a sedate driver: The Freestyle is a stable performer with superb ride quality and is a more fun to drive car overall. The Aura on the other hand does offer an adequately powered motor and easy drivability in most scenarios. High speed ride quality of the Aura isn't the best with the ride getting bouncy with speed.

6. Safety ratings - not a high priority, considering the usage: The freestyle would definitely be the safer of the two, although not crash tested, however the Figo did score 3 stars in the older NCAP, and the freestyle should have scored similarly if not better, The Aura has a 2 star rating from Global NCAP.
The freestyle also gets ESP, Hill Hold and Traction Control which the Aura lacks.

So overall, the Freestyle wins on performance, highway stability and safety which are not the highest priority for your use case and the Aura wins on fuel economy which is of utmost priority, boot space and maintenance.

However another factor to be considered is the fact that Ford has exited the Indian market and therefore resale, spare parts etc are more likely going to be an issue if you intend to hold on to the car for long. hence the Hyundai Aura is likely to be the safer bet.

This being a second hand car, I'd suggest to go with whichever is in better condition. Since your friend is neither particular about Freestyle's performance nor about Aura's boot space, I think both cars deserve an equal chance. As a product, I would rate Freestyle slightly above Aura but not by a huge margin (esp. for a non-enthusiast).

As a vehicle, I think the Freestyle is the much better engineered product, however from your description of this person none of the strengths of the Ford are a priority for him, although I think over time one will appreciate the benefits of a well engineered car.

I personally have never been a fan of the Hyundai 1.2L diesel based on my experience of sitting in countless Xcent cabs. It has vibrations, is not very refined and feels very short on power.

I would say let him take both cars for a nice longish drive and decide. Ford service should be fine for another 5 years or so.

Also tell him to consider a Dzire diesel (best for his intended usage) or a pre-owned i20 diesel (superior car overall to the Aura, and since boot isn't important to him). The i20 will have equal / better social standing than the Aura too.

For a long term and hassle free ownership, Ford should be given a pass (unless available for a considerable discount). I suggest the DZire or a Swift for the fuel economy and ease of ownership.

PS: My FIL owns a Freestyle diesel. The service experience is already becoming slightly patchy in a semi-urban town in Odisha. Also his 3.5 yr old car hasn't aged well as I expected.

Edit: I found my review of the Freestyle that I wrote two years ago. Earlier this year, when I drove it the interior rattles had increased some more. Highlighting the points which might matter from a pure city use point of view.

Post Ford's exit, its always better to keep a safe distance from used Ford's however attractive, drivable, ergonomic, well engineered etc these may be. Unless your friend desires to sell it off after five years of usage it's not a good buy. Even then, he would get much less than what he bought it for. And selling the car would pose a problem.

Aura is not that eye catching with more USP's, other than the fact that it does its duties.

There are ample used cars in the market and he can for sure get a good choice if he chooses a Maruti, Hyundai or Honda sedan within his budget. Patience, time and motivation play important roles and as a rule, narrowing our choice to only two cars is avoidable while shopping for used cars.

I would say look elsewhere and some more.

If your friend is worried about expensive maintenance then wouldn't the disproportionate drop in resale of the discontinued Freestyle turn out to be quite expensive overall? And this is not a guess.
Spares will eventually get dearer and costlier in case any non standard repair has to happen.

I would suggest a ciaz/scross diesel. You won't get 2019 vintage with that budget though. But the DDIS200 is among the most reliable diesel motors in the segment. Both cars are very spacious too. A <50k run 2017/18 samples may fall in the same budget.

Driving the Madras city suburbs I would give safety a higher priority. There is speed (60-80 kph) and there is chaos as well.

If he is doing 60 km a day, most likely he'll end up clocking about 20-25K a year. How long is this going to continue? If its on long term, he may want to look at new options as well.

Is he going to travel all paved roads, how much bad roading is involved?

• Aura/Xcent is all about FE. Its basically an i10 in sedan form factor. So don't expect it be a safer car. Also refinement is not at the level of i20 1.4 CRDI.
• City diesel offers great FE and good safety as well. You can look at other Honda diesels as well, Amaze and Jazz. The clatter will definitely be higher.
• Etios diesel (2014 and later) has a good safety rating as well.
• Among MJD cars you can look at Zest or Ciaz. S-Cross if he wants a crossover. I owned the S-Cross and hypermiled it at 22-23 kpl on suburban commutes, and it can deal with urban bad roads easily.
• Off the book, Micra and Pulse diesel are FE champions. But their service support is awful.

Used diesel cars are highly prone to odometer rigging. Please make sure you've gone through the service history before taking a plunge.

If you ask me , my suggestion would be to choose the xcent/ grand i10 automatic /manual diesel (pre-owned). The last generation one was quite a manageable car.

Another valuable option should be Toyota etios /liva. A Japanese car is something you wouldn't go wrong with and should easily be available to an extent in pre-owned market.

Also could you please elaborate on what would be your friend's driving routine? Considering commuting in Chennai is quite unpredictable these days thanks to unexpected traffic surge, I would be able to help you narrow down some options.

I would suggest you to look for brezza diesel as you have considered the freestyle if budget is not an issue
you can also look for ciaz/city diesel as they are more premium than the above.

you can get a used Toyota Yaris for a great bargain. and unlike Ford, toyota is still around so service should not be an issue

Yaris sedan was a petrol only right? OP is looking only at diesels given the big commute mileage.

Although the priorities are screaming for a Maruti Diesel (1.3 SDE- Dezire, Ritz or Ciaz) or Honda Diesel (Amaze, WRV)= Low maintenance, Very high mileage, Service support. It would be possible to find some good example in above two OEMs.

But if your friend has only two given option- Hyundai Aura and Ford Freestyle then between the two, Hyundai Aura is the best option for:

-Better Service support (remember recent thread on apathy from Ford's service)
-Lower ownership cost
-Better reselling cost

Mileage-wise both would be similar. Ford freestyle although is SUVish, but the use case did not warrant for that. All the best.
