….
Questions.
  1. RR reliability, particularly Velar ?
  2. Cost of ownership (compared to others in the mix) ?
  3. Any other brand which I should suggest him to try ?

The options are so many. Its really a difficult choice.

Indians love merc brand for its status.

Not a petrol head! BMW/Porsche out of the line.

Range Rover- Poor reliability.

Audi Q7- Overall best! But only in petrol. And Audi’s future in India is unpredictable due to very poor sales.

Toyota vellfire>Kia Carnival- Most Reliable. Best in comfort. But the van like design, I am not a fan.

Volvo XC90- Best in safety and timeless looks. But Volvo as a name, bus like feeling on hearing in India.

Verdict- Merc GLE

Re: Which Luxury SUV for 1.5 crore rupees?

Not a petrol head, wants comfort and some degree of reliability.

I would peg BMW and Mercedes much higher than RR etc on the reliability factor. With a 1.5 cr budget I’d prioritize a comfortable second row experience too and my top three choices for him would actually be the petrol variants of the X7, GLE and finally the X5 - in that order.

1. X7: Supreme 2nd row comfort combined with BMW (relative) reliability. If he is predominately self driven it may feel just a size larger than his needs.

2. GLE: An excellent product again, slightly lower price points and a great back seat experience. Reliable enough although BMW holds the edge. It is the perfect blend of right size without compromised back seat comfort. It’ll be fast enough to bring smiles although it may not have the dynamic sharpness of an X5.
3. X5 40i: Again, great to drive as well as BMW reliability but can feel a little shortchanged in the back seat.

I’ve ruled out Volvos for being too outdated and any RR for not being reliable (fill it, shut it, forget it types).

Mercedes and BMW cars are E25 compatible. Jaguar Land Rover is making its cars compatible with E20 starting Model Year 2026(checked the owners manual, MY25 manual doesn't say anything about E20, but MY26 has a specific column for E20 compatibility for India). Toyota and Lexus cars are E20 compatible as well. Not sure about the others.

Velar is due for an update soon and it will unfortunately be electric only. They've redesigned the car to be much lower. There's no point getting one. X5 is a good choice and the B58 is a fantastic engine. Your friend should ideally get that as it is reliable and fun and will soon disappear as BMW shifts focus to EVs with neue-klasse.
