Yeah sure...the only difference is I'd want my sportscar even more raw then, almost like a race car for the road, lightened, raucous and totally flat on corners. No electronics. All manual

A sedan that handles like a sports car and a sports car that handles like a kart. Now were talking!

During normal driving in an auto, me!

That's part of driving an auto, surely. I want it to give me acceleration on demand; if it needs to change down to do that, so-be-it, I don't care. I can observer the tacho if I want, or listen to the engine sound of course, I am not unaware, just not interested.

But, these days, I drive a manual.

(err... a car with a manual gear box, just in case anybody else got a sudden mental pic of Thad riding an instruction book down the road )

Maybe.

But this is the fastest car I have ever driven. It's all relative, see?

@Immortalz: When you did redline it what speeds did you attain per gear? It will be interesting to compare it with the manual.

In Civic AT, here are the speedo readings at max-redline: (approx 6,750 rpm)
1st gear - 66 kmph
2nd gear - 116 kmph
3rd gear - 173 kmph

Of course in 3rd gear it can only be done on safe roads!

Please let me know the speeds attained in the manual.

My speeds per gear are as follows:
1st: 57 kmph
2nd: 94 kmph
3rd: 147 kmph
4th: 205 kmph
I could not go to 5th and 6th.

However I have a close ratio gearbox. Can a member with the Civic 1.8 MT post their speeds for the same?

It sure depends on the make of the car.My experience with an auto is a santro AT.I owned a santro manual at that time and this auto was my relatives car.Initial feel is that AT is faster off the block but arround 60kmph the manual takes the lead as the AT is straining after that. The AT becomes smooth after arround 70kmph but by that time manual would half a km ahead.Cant say which is faster. The statement under question is which is faster and faster till 60kmph or 100 kmph or faster off the block-and that depends on the usage etc.
An AT would be comfortable in city and from a traffic light i am sure AT would be faster. On a high way i feel the MT would be a better one.

I believe manuals are faster. They are much more fun to drive. What's the fun in just sitting back holding the steering wheel? A manual is more in my control, I can push it to limits and it is more responsive to me IMHO.
even the article I read in top gear, clarkson leans towards manuals. anyway automatic are good too, but I never enjoy them.
There's something magical about manuals.

Well the question is slightly tricky as it is driver dependent. Automatics are kind of driver proof and take mili seconds to upshift. In automatics, CVT's are the best (personal opinion). In the hand of a skilled driver manuals would be faster but still upshift will not be as quick as in auto.

Thats precisely why i thought of this thread. Anyways, good to see a varied opinion and response to the question.

Though I feel more secure in an MT at high speeds [read above 140 kph], ATs are a breeze in the irritating slow moving traffic.

At highways too, modern ATs such as the Civic are good!

Ofcourse, i'd prefer the MT for track
