Wikipedia has a fabulous selection of articles along with pictures of the different models over the years. Going throught hem should help you learn more about them & the differences between them.

see this photo of the W108 from wikipedia doesn't it not look similar to the the W114 picture posted by you.
Image:W108 Bild03.jpg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Could spot one differnce front though now the w114 has flat front rectangular lights whereas they are a little curved in the case of the w108.
Can tell me which one is this a W140 or a W124 if yes how ?

But one of my questions is till unanswered what does that w stand for?

Revved, if youwant to differentiate a heckflosse(108) from a compact(114/5) from the front view, the easiest way would be to look for the small air intake on the top of the bonnet. The 114/5 does not have those, whereas the tailfin models do.
See pic

Also, to avoid further confusion, here's a pic of the different fintail models

Last query can you also tell how to tell the w124 from the w140 on the basis of their front view.

the w124 (E class) is a far smaller car than the w140 (S class). the size is also narrower than the w140.

w124

w140

Coming back to the topic, thanks for your inputs.

Keeping in mind the restoration that needs to be done right away and possibly over a period of time, I too feel the price is on the higher side. Apparently, the owner does not use it any more and is just waiting for the best price.

been busy at office and have neither got a chance to do a second check or take this deal further. Will keep you posted !!

Nevertheless, i must admit that i have started liking the simplicty of the W123 (over the W124).

i would suggest you go over to the car have a second look and give the owner a quote suited to you. the owner always waits for the best price but then settles back to reality.
yes the w123 grows on you after a period of time and once you have the taste of it dont want to let it go. i prefer driveing my 240d over any other car in the market.
