2023 Toyota Tacoma to preview next-gen Fortuner, Hilux platform

Toyota could use the same hybrid powertrain on the next-gen SUV & pickup as well; albeit with a different power output.

Toyota has released the first teaser of its upcoming Tacoma pickup truck for the North American market. The new Toyota Tacoma is said to be based on an all-new platform and features a bunch of new tech and a hybrid powertrain.

According to media reports, the new architecture on which the new-gen Tacoma is based is Toyota's modular TNGA-F platform. While the Tacoma itself will not come to India, the TNGA-F platform will make its way onto some of the Indian models, including the next-gen Fortuner SUV and Hilux pickup truck. The new platform has multiple iterations available, one of which already underpins the Toyota Land Cruiser 300 and the Lexus LX500d.

With the next-gen Fortuner & Hilux being underpinned by the same platform as the Tacoma, Toyota could use the same hybrid powertrain on the next-gen SUV & pickup as well; albeit with a different power output. The powertrain comes in the form of a 2.4-litre 4-cylinder hybrid turbo-petrol engine.

Both, the Fortuner & Hilux could further borrow design cues from the Tacoma, which itself takes inspiration from other Toyota models such as the Land Cruiser, Tundra & Sequoia. Having said that, the next-gen Fortuner & Hilux is still a while away, with more details on the same expected in the coming months.
