2024 Audi Q7 vs Mercedes GLE vs BMW X5 vs RR Velar vs Volvo XC90

I prize reliability and long term ease of maintenance and good solid service from the authorized dealer above status and logo value.

2024 Audi Q7

What you'll like:

• Good looking German SUV. Clean and timeless design has a certain appeal
• Extremely well-priced for a full-size luxury SUV (discounts available from Audi dealers)
• 3.0L V6 with 8-speed automatic is fun to drive! 0-100 km/h in 5.6 seconds
• Air suspension offers a very comfortable ride
• Spot-on ergonomics and high-quality materials used all over the cabin
• Good overall space with comfortable 2nd row seats and a big boot
• Features like 4-zone climate control, 19 speaker Bang & Olufsen 3D Sound System, Matrix LED headlamps, auto-dimming ORVMs, electrically foldable 3rd-row seats, etc.
• 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating, 8 airbags, Park Assist Plus with 360-degree cam, lane keep assist and TPMS

What you won't:

• Shows its age. This 2nd-gen Q7 is now 10 years old, with an all-new gen on the horizon
• Offered with just one engine option. Competitors offer diesels as well
• 3rd row of seats is strictly for kids. Not suitable for adults at all
• Missing features like ADAS, a spare wheel (!!!), head-up display, wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, ventilated seats, etc.
• The interiors feel very similar to other cars in the Audi range

I'll offer my uneducated two paisa worth. I prize reliability and long term ease of maintenance and good solid service from the authorized dealer above status and logo value. To that extent my views are biased. I've checked out the GLE & XC90 before hence am attempting to answer. First off I'd eliminate the Mercedes and the Rover on grounds of poor maintenance and spare part support and several horror stories I've heard from friends and neighbours on these two brands. Though in looks and interiors the Rover is great. IMHO in looks Mercedes is the weakest. Between Audi, BMW and Volvo I would say pick what appeals to you. In terms of quality I would rate BMW and Volvo ahead of Audi but that is just my view. If Audi is what your heart is set on go for it. Best of luck. Happy motoring.

PS: I'm not an auto expert or enthusiast by any stretch so treat these as a layman's opinion.

Having driven all these cars for at least a few hundred km, easily the X5 is the pick. With recent LCI refresh about a year ago, it’s gotten better - lovely interiors, fantastic ride and handling, diesel drives well (slightly gruff, I am nitpicking) and the petrol motor is superb. However, it’s pricier than before. The Q7 entry model gives a fantastic value. At about 25 Lakh cheaper on road, that’s my value pick because it’s not 25 Lakh less of a car than the X5!

Lexus RX500H is a refreshing third option if you want something different. The 4 pot drives like an 8 cylinder thanks to the hybrid boost. Low speed ride could have been better, looks half a size smaller than the segment. The 350H is a bit underwhelming, if you are predominantly chauffeured around - that’s fine as well.
