56 pedestrians die on Indian roads daily

According to a media report, the number of pedestrians killed on Indian roads went up by 66% from 12,330 in 2014 to 20,457 in 2017. This translates to a figure of 56 fatalities per day. 

Similarly, the number people killed on bicycles and 2-wheelers is also on the rise. In 2017, 3,559 cyclists were killed on Indian roads, while the number of 2-wheeler fatalities was put at 48,746.

The highest number of pedestrian fatalities were reported in Tamil Nadu, where 3,507 pedestrians were killed in road accidents in 2017. 1,831 deaths were recorded in Maharashtra followed by 1,379 in Andhra Pradesh. Tamil Nadu also had the highest 2-wheeler deaths at 6,329. Uttar Pradesh recorded 5,699 deaths, while Maharashtra accounted for 4,659.
