The Government of India has proposed a new safety regulation that mandates all 2-wheelers sold in India to be equipped with an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS).
Currently, ABS is compulsory for 2-wheelers above 150cc. With the new regulation, all 2-wheelers, including entry-level variants, will be required to have this safety feature. As a result, prices are estimated to increase by around Rs 2,500-5,000.
It is said that entry-level 2-wheelers account for about 75% of the domestic market. In FY2025, 75cc to 125cc models accounted for two-thirds of the domestic sales. 2-wheelers also account for 44% of road fatalities in India.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is expected to issue a notification regarding the new regulations soon.
