All-electric Volvo EX90 unveiled at CES 2023

Volvo has unveiled its all-new all-electric EX90 - the brand's new flagship SUV.

The new Volvo EX90 is the brand's third-all-electric offering, after the XC40 Recharge & C40 Recharge and is said to be the EV equivalent to the brand's XC90 offering. The electric SUV is said to be longer and wider than the XC90 while sitting a bit lower to the ground. The SUV claims to have a drag coefficient of 0.29Cd.

In terms of design, the EX90 retains the familiar Volvo styling elements, including the Thor's Hammer headlights, along with a blanked-off grille like the XC40 Recharge. Other design elements include flush-fitting door handles, 22-inch alloy wheels, spilt tail lamp design with a C-shaped LED unit and plenty of other creases on the side, giving a tinge of resemblance to the XC90.

The Volvo EX90 comes with a Lidar system featuring 8 cameras and 16 ultrasonic sensors all around the car. This allows the vehicle to detect even small objects as far as 600 feet away day or night, even at highway speeds. The EX90 also comes with capacitive steering and camera-based gaze sensors to determine whether the driver is alert, sleepy or distracted.

Inside, the EX90 comes with a large vertically-oriented 14.5-inch touchscreen with Volvo's Google-based infotainment. The electric SUV also gets 5G connectivity as standard to help with over-the-air updates, along with other features like a panoramic sunroof, and a Bowers&Wilkins Audio system with speakers integrated into the seat's headrests. The seats themselves use Nodico upholstery which is made from recycled materials. Volvo also states that the EX90 contains 15% recycled steel, 25% recycled aluminium & 48kg of recycled plastics & bio-based materials.

The flagship EV from Volvo is powered by a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain offering two levels of output. The base model offers 408 BHP & 770 Nm, while the Performance models offer 517 BHP & 910 Nm, however, both versions have a top speed limited to 180 km/h. Volvo claims that the EX90 will offer 600 km of range (WLTP cycle) on a single charge from its 111 kW battery pack. The EV also gets fast charging support allowing 10 - 80 per cent charge in under 30 mins.
