ARAI to test Volkswagen cars that are already in use

The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) is planning to carry out test on Volkswagen cars to determine if any emission norms are being flouted. For this, the organisation will pick up samples of Volkswagen vehicles that are already in use, with the consent of the owners. This is for the first time such an exercise is being carried out.

The ARAI believes that if it takes samples from Volkswagen, the might be provided with vehicles that meet the necessary emission levels. Previously General Motors had committed a fraud by fudging emission details. By picking up samples of cars that are already on the road, the ARAI wants to ensure that such a fraud is not repeated. The organisation is likely to take about 4 weeks to submit its report.

In September, Volkswagen announced that 11 million cars globally had been fitted with the "defeat device", which enabled them to clear pollution tests. The company now faces big fines and lawsuits. The emission scandal has tarnished Volkswagen's image worldwide and has resulted in its CEO and other officials being replaced.

Cars from Audi and Skoda, which are a part of the Volkswagen group, have also been affected.
