Ashok Leyland builds Light Bullet Proof Vehicle for Air Force

The LBPV is an adopted version of Lockheed Martin’s Common Vehicle Next Gen and has been developed under Transfer of Technology to Ashok Leyland. The vehicle is well protected from both ballistic & blast threats and can launch attacks.

Ashok Leyland has delivered the first of its kind “Light Bullet Proof Vehicles” (LBPV) to the Indian Air force. The first lot of these vehicles were delivered on April 13, 2021.

The LBPV is an adopted version of Lockheed Martin’s (LM) Common Vehicle Next Gen (CVNG) and has been developed under Transfer of Technology (ToT) from LM to Ashok Leyland. It is completely indigenized and developed in India.

The LBPV has high off-road mobility in mud, sand, rocks, and shallow water. It has a high payload fraction, accommodating a crew of 6 and ample cargo space to carry substantial mission equipment. The vehicle is well protected from both ballistic & blast threats and can launch attacks.

Ashok Leyland claims that the vehicle has very good ride quality and low occupant-absorbed power, which allows the crew to endure driving long distances off-road and still be an effective fighting / workforce at the end of the trip.

Ashok Leyland’s mobility solutions range from 4x4 to 12x12 for defence personnel and logistics. The company’s relationship with Lockheed Martin started in 2014 with the CVNG Program. Under ToT, it hopes to develop many more products for India and the export market.
