Ayudha Pooja for automobiles: Enthusiasts share their experiences

We wash our vehicles, wipe them clean, apply sandal paste & vermilion on the bonnet, garland them & do a customary Pooja to ward off the evil eye.

BHPian Geta recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Hindus in Tamil Nadu celebrate Ayudha Pooja on the ninth day of Navaratri. This day is essentially for cleaning, maintaining and paying obeisance to your professional equipment and machinery, for serving you well throughout the year. Since Navaratri is the celebration of the invisible energy (Shakti, personified as womanhood), it may be construed that the reverence is for the energy that is a part of the professional machinery.

So we wash our vehicles, wipe them clean, apply sandal paste and vermilion on the bonnet, garland them, do a customary Pooja to ward off the evil eye, break coconuts and pumpkins and crush lemons under the wheels.

I am not sure whether such a custom is practiced in other states. Hence just felt like sharing this with the other enthusiasts here.

Here's what GTO had to say about the matter:

My bhabhi did the pooja on Dussehra for all our cars.

Bonus pics of celebrations & visarjan from last evening!

Here's what BHPian 4x4addict had to say about the matter:

Just finished pooja for my office/company vehicles as well.

Here's what BHPian Amey Kulkarni had to say about the matter:

Away from home. But, the culture is never forgotten.

Here's what BHPian rajshenoy had to say about the matter:

Have been following this ritual in Karnataka as well. Would love to know if this is only specific to the south in general or followed in the rest of our country as well. The custom goes beyond just automobiles and is applicable to any of the industrial tools and equipment which can be termed as "Ayusha" or a tool or weapon.

Here's what BHPian pkulkarni.2106 had to say about the matter:

It's followed in Maharashtra as well. Instead on the ninth day, we do it on Vijaya Dashami (Dussehra). Along with vehicles, we also do wash/clean/do Pooja of tools/equipment etc.
