Ban on bull bars, crash guards stayed till April 18, 2018

In December 2017, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had issued a circular to state authorities to take action against vehicles with bull bars and crash guards. In a recent development, the Delhi High Court has put a stay on the ban on bull bars till April 18, 2018.

A bench comprising of Active Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C. Hari Shankar has asked the ministry to examine the matter and file a reply, since according to the court, the ministry did not interpret the Motor Vehicles Act properly while issuing the notification. The court has also directed the authorities to not issue challans till the next hearing which is on April 18, 2018.

Earlier, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had directed all state authorities to take strict action against vehicles with crash guards, sighting safety concerns to pedestrians and occupants of vehicles. A petition was later filed against the government's decision claiming that the decision was taken without carrying out a scientific study about the safety of bull bars and crash guards.
