BMW 5-Series facelift spied testing with Neue Klasse updates

The sedan is set to get Neue Klasse design updates, which is a major shift for the carmaker going forward.

BMW is readying a facelifted version of the 5-Series and first spy shots of the car testing have emerged. The sedan is set to get Neue Klasse design updates, which is a major shift for the carmaker going forward.

Up front, the twin kidney grilles are now slimmer and wider and flow into the new restyled headlamps. There is a new front bumper and a new mid-mounted intake. The lower intake has also been redesigned and gets a vertical bar.

That apart, the overall silhouette of the 5-Series remains similar to the current car. The rear could come with new design tail lamps and a restyled bumper.

The updated 5-Series is expected to come with the new Panoramic iDrive and Operating System X, both of which were previewed at CES. Future models will get a customizable pillar-to-pillar display that will be divided into multiple sections. There will be a central infotainment system and a new multifunction steering wheel that will replace the iDrive controller.

Engines-wise, it is expected to continue with the 2.0-litre four-cylinder twin turbo petrol putting out 255 bhp and 400 Nm of torque. The 3.0-litre six-cylinder twin-turbo motor could see a power bump up to 393 bhp and 580 Nm torque. This would be an increase of 18 bhp and 41 Nm over the current spec. Upgraded plug-in hybrid and electric variants could also be offered.

The BMW 5-Series facelift is expected to launch mid-to-late next year.

India currently gets the long wheelbase version of the 5-Series.
