BMW Invests In Vegan Leather Company

BMW will also form a strategic partnership with NFW to further its goals of reducing its carbon footprint.

BMW i Ventures has invested in Natural Fiber Welding (NFW) - a company that produces sustainable alternatives to materials, including the manufacturing of biodegradable vegan leather.

The investment by BMW i Ventures will allow NFW to scale up from batch processing to commercial production. In addition to the investment, BMW will also form a strategic partnership with NFW to further its goals of reducing its carbon footprint across the entire value chain.

The interiors on future BMW models could soon use recyclable materials with a lower carbon footprint while continuing to maintain the same level of premium-ness and aesthetics.

Kasper Sage, Managing Partner, BMW i Ventures, stated that NFW has developed an innovative process of converting plants into 100% natural and recyclable materials, which mimics the same properties of traditional leather. With the investment at NFW, the company will have a scalable, cost-effective alternative to leather. This will help in advancing the decarbonisation of the automotive industry.
