BMW M5 getting a Neue Klasse inspired facelift

The updated M5 is expected to come with the Panoramic iDrive and Operating System X

The latest-generation BMW M5 may have launched less than a year ago but a facelift seems already in the works. It could come with BMW's Neue Klasse treatment, which is the car maker's new design language for future models.

A prototype has been caught testing and while it is heavily camouflaged, some details are visible. The front grille is shorter and flows into the headlights. There is a new front bumper with a middle intake as well as a reworked lower opening. While the rest of the design remains largely unchanged, one can expect new taillights and a new rear bumper.

The updated M5 is expected to come with the Panoramic iDrive and Operating System X, which were previewed at CES earlier this year. All future BMWs will come with this pillar-to-pillar display.

The screen is divided into three separate sections. One is a digital instrument cluster, while the others can be customized with widgets. One can also expect a new centre infotainment system and a new multi-function steering wheel that will replace the iDrive controller.

It is not known if the M5 facelift will get any performance updates. The M5 is currently powered by a 4.4-litre twin turbo V8 with a 14.8 kWh battery. It gets an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Total power output is 707 BHP and 1000 Nm torque. It does the 0 to 100 kph sprint in 3.4 seconds and has a top speed of 306 kph.
