Cars with upto 8 seats no longer need to carry a spare tyre

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has notified that cars fitted with tubeless tyres need not carry a spare tyre.

The notification states that vehicles must also be fitted with a tyre pressure monitoring system approved as per AIS 110 and a tyre repair kit. This rule will be applicable to vehicles of the M1 and N1 category manufactured after October 1, 2020. M1 category is for vehicles with 9 seats (including the driver) and maximum mass of 3.5 ton, while N1 is for goods vehicles with up to 2.5 ton gross weight.

Many CBU cars come without a spare tyre and are fitted with run-flats and have a puncture repair kit. This notification would make it legal for such cars to not be equipped with a spare tyre.
