The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued a show cause notice to Ola Electric following a rise in consumer complaints about their electric scooters.
According to media reports, the notice was issued under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, on October 3. It flags potential violations of the Consumer Protection Act, including allegations about manufacturing defects, sales of second-hand vehicles, incomplete refunds on cancellations, recurring issues post-service, overcharging, inaccurate billing, and battery and component problems. The notice also highlights complaints about unprofessional behaviour and improper complaint resolutions.
There has been a significant rise in complaints regarding Ola e-scooters in recent times. The National Consumer Helpline, managed by the Department of Consumer Affairs, is said to have received 10,644 complaints against the company from September 1, 2023, to August 30, 2024. Of these, 3,389 relate to service delays, 1,899 are for delays in delivery, and 1,459 complaints allege unfulfilled promised services.
There has been no official word from Ola Electric about the show cause notice yet. The company is expected to submit its response within 15 days.
