Chevrolet Essentia compact sedan spotted testing

Chevrolet India has been planning to launch a compact sedan based on the Beat hatchback. These plans first came to light when the automaker showcased the Essentia concept at the 2016 Auto Expo. The Essentia now appears to have entered into the testing phase of its product development cycle, as a single test mule was spotted on public roads with heavy camouflage.

Though the spotted model has been completely disguised under thick camouflage, the overall proportions of the car appear to be similar to that of the concept model showcased at the auto expo. The side profile and the taller boot lid are easily recognizable. However, it remains to be seen what all elements from the car's front and rear are carried forward in the production model.

Powering options are expected to be the same 936 cc three-cylinder diesel and 1.2-litre petrol units that power the Beat hatchback. Both these engines will be mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

The Chevrolet Essentia launch is likely to be scheduled sometime next year. It will go head on against the likes of the Maruti DZire, Hyundai XCent, and Honda Amaze.
