Child locks to be disabled in cabs from July 1, 2019

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a notification mandating the deactivation of child locks in M1 category of transport vehicles from July 1, 2019.

Child locks are provided in cars as an additional safety feature to prevent children sitting in the back seat from inadvertently opening the rear doors. However, the government has said that this feature can be misused by criminals, compromising the safety of passengers, especially women.

M category vehicles are used for transporting passengers. Vehicles in the M1 category have no more than 8-seats in addition to the driver. These primarily include cabs.
