The Coronavirus pandemic has forced the organizers of the Tokyo Motor Show to cancel this year's event. The biennial auto show was scheduled to be held in autumn, after the Tokyo Olympics.

In 2020, most car shows were cancelled as the coronavirus swept across the world. This year, countries are reporting a rise in cases due to more infectious variants of the virus. Covid-19 cases in Japan are also rising which could result in yet another state of emergency being imposed in Tokyo and other cities.

According to the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA), around 1.3 million people visited the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show.
