Covid-19 effect: Car sales crash in March 2020

March 2020 saw a sharp decline in car sales due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdown. Overall sales across all brands fell by 51% compared to the same period last year.

Maruti Suzuki sold 76,240 units, recording a drop of 47% compared to March 2019. Hyundai sales were also down 41%.

Mahindra saw a massive 88% drop in sales, while Tata Motors registered a 70% reduction. Mahindra and Tata sold 3,383 units and 5,676 units respectively.

Toyota and Renault sales were down by 45% and 54% respectively. Toyota dispatched 7,023 cars, while Renault sold just 3,269 units.

Ford sold 3,510 units and saw a de-growth of 58%, while Honda sold 3,697 units, down 72%.

Skoda sales were down by 68%, while Fiat registered an 89% decline in sales. Datsun and Volkswagen sales were down 92% and 95% respectively. With just 673 units sold, Nissan sales were down by 31%.

Sales of light commercial vehicles (LCVs) was also affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Sales were down 62% compared to the same period last year.
