The government of Delhi has banned bike taxi services operated by Ola, Uber and Rapido with immediate effect.
The Delhi Transport Department has issued a public notice ordering aggregators to stop plying their bike taxis. The notice stated that 2-wheelers having non-transport registration numbers were being used to carry passengers in violation of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
Those facilitating the operation will be charged a fine of Rs 1 lakh under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The government also announced a fine of Rs 5,000 for the first offence and Rs 10,000 and imprisonment for subsequent violations. Violations could also result in the driver getting his driving license suspended for a minimum period of 3 years.
Earlier, the government of Maharashtra had also banned Rapido, Ola and Uber from operating bike taxis in the state.
