Delhi: Prices of Scorpio, XUV500 with 1.99L engine revealed

In December 2015, the Supreme Court of India banned the registration of cars with diesel engines displacing more than 2,000cc in Delhi. This order prevented Mahindra from selling its

Scorpio and XUV500 SUVs in the national capital. In January 2016, Mahindra responded by announcing that the two models would get a 1.99-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine so that sales could restart. This unit is a downsized version of its 2.2-litre mHawk engine.

Now, the prices of the Scorpio and XUV500 with the 1.99-litre engine have been revealed. While the Scorpio is priced between Rs. 9.67 lakh and Rs. 12.75 lakh, the XUV500 is priced between Rs. 11.58 lakh and Rs. 15.51 lakh (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi).

In the Scorpio, the 1.99-litre engine produces 120 HP and 280 Nm of torque. In the XUV500 it develops 140 HP and 320 Nm of torque (vs the 330 Nm of the 2.2L XUV500). At present, both cars are offered with manual transmissions (5-speed in the Scorpio and 6-speed in the XUV500) and in two-wheel drive configuration only.
