Experience: Renewing the fitness certificate of my 2007 Maruti Swift

When its your turn, hand over the document and he will ask you to read out the chassis number from your car for verification.

BHPian callnishanth recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Sharing my experience of renewing the FC in Feb 2022 for my 2007 Swift at KA-04 Yeshwantpur( Bangalore North) RTO. Maybe used as a the latest guide for KA-04 vehicles. I suggest you go directly as the process is pretty straightforward.

Based on watching the inspector checking the vehicles, it is best to get the following done:

  • Fix major dents and paint scratches.
  • Ensure No visible rust marks.
  • All lights should be in working condition.
  • No cracks on windscreen.
  • Although I dont know if a rule exists - Put an IND number plate from local shop.

Things to do at home:

Login to https://parivahan.gov.in/

  • Choose Online Services - Vehicle Related Services. Choose State (Karnataka).
  • On Next Page : Click on Vehicle Registration No. and enter your vehicle registration number without any spaces. ex : KA04AA0000 and Submit.
  • Read and Click on OK on any popup.
  • Choose "Renewal of Registration" for private (White Board). I was selecting "Apply for Fitness" and I understood from RTO that this is for Yellow Board Vehicles.
  • On the Next Page : Input the last 5 digits for your chassis number and click Veryify Details.
  • On the Next Page : DO NOT select any of the checkboxes if you DONT have any address/owner change or hypothecation. Just head to the bottom of the page and click on Pay and complete the payment. For my 2007 swift, it costed me Rs. 2300.

Green tax=500 ; RC Fees = 200 ; Renewal Fees = 600 ; Road Safety Tax = 1000.

After the payment, download and print out the payment receipt and filled form 25. You can also do it using the Status tab (on the page where you selected "Renewal of Registration" ). No need to paste photo.

The Payment ID will be your application number for future reference.

I had an issue where I had to get the "Tax Cleared" which seems to be some option internal to the RTO software and didn't require me to pay anything as such. All I had do was to go to a lady called Bharati (Next to the cash counter - 3rd Floor) and give her my vehicle details and ask her to give clearance before proceeding with some steps. You may need to do this if you get stuck in any of the above steps.

  • Take a set of photocopies of RC, insurance and pollution and Aadhar Card. You can keep the RC photocopy with you and you need to put the others into a file later.
  • Pencil your chassis number onto this form, at the bottom. Check You Tube on where you can find this for your vehicle.

At the RTO - Better to reach around around 11:30 a.m. - 12 noon:

  • Out of any of the numerous photocopying shops, ask for a brown file, green envelope (with stamps), small platic pouch to put in your RC card and File Tag thread.
  • File in the following order - RC card (pouch), Form 25, payment receipt, insurance, PUC, Aadhar & envelope. Write your name, car #, reason for submitting file - RC renewal. Fill the envelope with your name, address and mobile number.
  • Go to 3rd floor Right Side Counter 5 (Kavita) and ask her to verify your file and put a signature (Mandatory Step).
  • Drive your car to the FC checking location about 1.5 km away ( Towards Mysore Lamps Factory / ESI Hospital on 8th Main Road Malleshwaram).
  • There are separate areas for white and yellow board vehicles. Try to reach around between 12 and 12:30 and you will find some cars parked in a Lay-by for FC).
  • Reaching before 12 may not be worth as once the inspection starts, all the vehicles will move pretty quickly and your spot in the line doesn't matter.
  • The inspector will be doing the fitness check for the yellow board vehicles in a ground across the street and will come around 12:30 - 12:45 for white boards.
  • When its your turn, hand over the document and he will ask you to read out the chassis number from your car for verification.
  • You have to then turn on your headlights and blinkers and he will check if you have a sun film on all your windows and walk around to check paint and dents, etc.
  • If all looks good, he will sign the form 25 and hand it back to you. You will now have to go to his chamber at 3 p.m. His room has the board - Inspector of Motor Vehicles, which is right oppsite to the stairs on 3rd floor in the RTO. There will be a person oppsite to the inspector's desk on a computer and you have to hand over the file to him and he will make an entry into the computer and hand back the file to you.
  • Hand the file over a lady in Counter 6. She will hand give you a receipt which you can use as proof for any traffic stops.
  • Sit tight and hope you get the RC (which now seems to be a print and not a card) to arrive within 1 month to your address.
