The minister for road transport and highways, Mr. Nitin Gadkari has approved a plan to increase expressway speed limits for passenger cars from 100 km/h to 120 km/h. Also, the speed limit on national highways has been raised from 80 km/h to 100 km/h. The proposal will now be sent to the law ministry for approval.

The government has also decided to revise the speed limits in urban areas. The speed limit for cars in municipal limits has been set at 70 km/h and for motorcycles at 60 km/h. The speed limit for bikes on highways and expressways has been set at 80 km/h. The new expressway speed limit for heavy vehicles like trucks and buses is 100 km/h and 90 km/h on national highways. Heavy vehicles will have to stick to 60 km/h within municipal limits.

In June 2017, a committee was setup to review speed limits in the country. In its final report, the committee had recommended revising the speed limits in wake of the improved road infrastructure and vehicle technology.
