R.I.P. Ford EcoSport: Last unit rolls off assembly line in India

The carmaker sold its Sanand factory to Tata Motors earlier this year.

The final EcoSport has rolled out of Ford’s manufacturing facility in Chennai. The last unit seen in these images is destined for export markets.

Last year, Ford announced its exit from the Indian market. The company started winding down its operations soon after the announcement. Production at the Sanand plant ended in October 2021 after the last unit of the Freestyle rolled out of the facility. The Chennai plant remained operational till now, producing cars and engines for export markets.

Ford has no plans to resume its operations in India. The carmaker sold its Sanand factory to Tata Motors earlier this year. The Chennai unit is also expected to be put up for sale soon.

The Ford EcoSport was showcased in concept form at the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo, before it went on sale in the Indian market a year later. It soon became one of the most popular models in the brand's line-up. This crossover was the first Ford in India to be offered with the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine. It also came with 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines.
