Govt. proposes 140 km/h speed limit on expressways

At present, the speed limit for cars on expressways is 120 km/h, while on national highways, cars are restricted to 100 km/h.

Nitin Gadkari, Minister for Road Transport and Highways, has stated that a bill to increase the speed limit on expressways to 140 km/h will soon be tabled in the Parliament.

At present, the speed limit for cars on expressways is 120 km/h, while on national highways, cars are restricted to 100 km/h. Gadkari believes that the speed limit on 4-lane roads should be at least 100 km/h, whereas on 2-lane and city roads it should be 80 km/h and 75 km/h respectively.

Modern expressways are much safer as they have fences on either side to keep animals and other trespassers out. However, improving road behaviour is still a challenge that needs to be tackled.
