Govt. proposes hike in vehicle registration & renewal fee

According to a media report, the government of India has proposed a hike in vehicle registration and renewal fee by more than 20 times of what is charged today.

If the proposal is approved, registration of new petrol or diesel vehicles could cost Rs. 5000, while renewal of registration could cost Rs. 10,000. At the same time, the government intends to waive off registration charges for electric and battery-operated vehicles.

Electric vehicles with a maximum speed of 25 km/h could be exempted from registration and renewal fees. Further, registration fees could be waived off for those who scrap their old vehicle for a new one.

Frequent fitness tests of commercial petrol and diesel vehicles have also been proposed. For commercial vehicles that are more than 15 years old, these tests might have to be conducted twice a year. The fee for manual and automated fitness tests are also likely to be increased. If the owners fail to get a fitness certificate before the expiry date, an additional fee of Rs. 50 could be charged for each day.
