Govt wants to hike renewal fees for 15-year old vehicles

According to a media report, the government of India could hike the renewal fees of 15-year old vehicles by up to 25 times.

It has been reported that if the road transport ministry's proposal for voluntary scrapping is approved, registration renewal fees for old private and commercial vehicles could go up. The annual fitness test fee for commercial vehicles could be up to 125 times of the current rates.

The government has proposed that renewal fee for 2-wheelers and 3-wheelers could go up from Rs. 300 to Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 3,000 respectively. 4-wheelers could be charged Rs. 15,000 instead of the current fee of Rs. 600. The renewed registration will be valid for 5 years.

As per the proposal, fitness test fee for trucks or buses that are more than 15-years old could be hiked from Rs. 200 to Rs. 25,000 and that for cabs and minitrucks could go up to Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 20,000 respectively.
