Honda to bring new Accord to India in 2016

Japanese carmaker Honda, has confirmed that it will bring the ninth generation Accord sedan to India in 2016. A refreshed version of the car is due for a facelift in global markets next year and that is the version that is likely to make it to our shores.

The Accord is expected to be powered by a 2.4-litre, 4-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine with both, manual and automatic transmission options. A hybrid power plant may be offered later as well, but there is no news of a diesel version as yet.

Externally, the new car is expected to be smaller than its predecessor. However, its interior space is likely will be at par with the old car thanks to clever packaging. The car's chassis will be stiffer and its wheelbase shorter than the old Accord.

Honda had withdrawn the Accord from the Indian automobile market in late 2013 due to poor sales and a shrinking D2 sedan segment. The company also prioritised its hatchback, smaller sedans and the Mobilio MPV, which are volume sellers.

Now Honda wants to re-enter the premium sedan segment. The next-generation Skoda Superb and Volkswagen Passat, which are the Accord's rivals, are expected to be launched next year as well.
