Hyundai halts its hydrogen-powertrain development program

Hyundai had previously announced ambitious plans for its hydrogen-powered models.

According to media reports, Hyundai is said to have indefinitely put a pause to the development of its hydrogen-electric powertrain.

Reports suggest that the decision to put the program on hold comes after conduction feasibility studies. It also suggested unspecified technical concerns, lack of marketability and other cost-related concerns as some of the possible reasons.

Reports also state that the decision was taken last month, with Hyundai's Fuel Cell division having been reorganised with the R&D team now significantly reduced. However, there is no official statement from Hyundai regarding the same.

The decision does come as a surprise considering Hyundai recently held their 'Hydrogen Wave' online event. The company even showcased an upcoming performance sports car concept called the 'Vision FK'.

Hyundai had previously announced ambitious plans for its hydrogen-powered models. These included a goal of producing 130,000 hydrogen cars annually by 2025.
