Hyundai & Kia to introduce 6 electric cars by 2024

Hyundai & Kia are developing a mass-market EV to take on the Tata Nexon EV and Tigor EV.

Hyundai and Kia have reportedly lined up six new electric cars for the Indian market. These EVs will cater to different segments of the market and are likely to be introduced in the next 3-years.

At present, the Kona EV is Hyundai's only all-electric offering in India. The second model is likely to be the Ioniq 5.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 (2023)

The Ioniq 5 is based on the E-GMP platform. It comes with a 58 kWh battery pack that powers a 168 BHP electric motor. The all-wheel-drive version packs 297 BHP and comes with a larger battery pack. Depending on the battery pack, the car can cover 385 km or 481 km on a single charge (WLTP cycle).

Kia EV6 (2022)

The EV6 shares the same modular electric architecture as the Ioniq 5. It too comes with two battery options and a dual-motor configuration. The peak output is 317 BHP and 605 Nm. The AWD version offers a maximum range of 510 km. The EV6 GT is the top-of-the-line version with 577 BHP and 740 Nm.

Both the Ioniq 5 and EV6 will be imported as completely built units (CBU).

Kia e-Niro (2023)

The e-Niro is Kia's version of the Kona EV. It uses the same 39.2 kWh battery to power an electric motor that produces 134 BHP. This variant offers a range of 289 km. The e-Niro also gets a larger 64 kWh battery option which has a range of 455 km. It powers a 201 BHP electric motor.

The updated Kona EV is expected to be launched in 2022. Both cars will be imported via the CKD route.

Mass-market EVs (2024)

A new mass-market EV based on a low-cost skateboard platform is also under development. It will be offered by both Hyundai and Kia in the sub- Rs. 15 lakh price bracket.

The mass-market EVs will be heavily localized to keep costs down and are likely to offer a maximum range of around 200-220 km.
