The government has imposed penalties of up to Rs 7,300 crore on eight carmakers for violating fleet emission norms in FY2022-23.
According to media reports, the government has found Hyundai, Mahindra, Kia, Honda, Renault, Nissan, Skoda and Force Motors to be in breach of the Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) norms. Hyundai faces the highest penalty of Rs 2,837.9 crore, followed by Mahindra with 1,788.4 crore and Kia with a fine of Rs 1,346.2 crore.
Honda and Renault have been fined Rs 457.7 crore and Rs 438.3 crore, respectively. Similarly, Nissan, Skoda and Force Motors face fines of Rs 172.3 crore, Rs 248.3 crore and Rs 1.8 crore, respectively.
As per the updated norms, which came into effect at the start of FY2022-23, manufacturers are required to achieve a fuel consumption rate of no more than 4.78 litres per 100 km and limit carbon dioxide emissions to 113 grams per km. However, manufacturers argue that applying the penalty structure to the entire financial year is unfair.
