Hyundai's Turbo GDI is first 1.0 turbo-petrol to succeed

According to a media report, the 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine was the most popular engine option in the Hyundai Venue. Out of 93,624 units sold in FY2020, 44,073 cars were powered by the turbo petrol, and 34,860 cars had a diesel engine.

In the Venue, the 1.0-litre turbo petrol produces 118 BHP @ 6,000 rpm and 172 Nm @ 1,500-4,000 rpm. The same engine is offered in the Verna as well. The Grand i10 Nios and the Aura get the engine in a lower state of tune. This engine is the first 1.0-litre turbo petrol to succeed in India. The Boosterjet engine that powered the Baleno was a flop and the EcoBoost engine in the EcoSport received a mediocre response.

Unlike other 3-cylinder engines, the NVH is good and very few vibrations come into the cabin. The overall driveability is good and power delivery feels linear. The mid-range, in particular, is fun. In the Venue, the engine is paired to a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed DCT. A 5-speed manual gearbox is offered in the Aura with the same engine.
