Impressed by Thar petrol's drivability & humbled by its fuel efficiency

Even the Jeep Wrangler Petrol has the same traits of fuel inefficiency and it weighs much the same too.

BHPian shankar.balan recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Renewing acquaintance with my Thar today after a week and specifically after driving 1000 km over the 4 days long weekend last week across varied terrain across Bangalore, Mysore and Nilgiris in my Gypsy.

Incidentally the previous weekend before R Day, I had also taken the Thar up to the Nilgiris and back just for a quick weekend trip.

The moment you hop in, and anywhere you choose to go, across more or less any kind of terrain, roads or no roads, the sheer confidence the Thar imparts is presently only rivalled by the Wrangler or Fortuner or similar. It is really an amazing vehicle. Whatever we may all say and crib about and accuse M&M of, this new Thar IS just an awesome beast in its own right.

And with the AVO suspension and underbody armour and all, I just don't bother much about any of the potholes or bumps or speed breakers.

And as long as one drives with steady momentum at a reasonable pace of 90-110 km/h and NOT just ‘flooring it’ keeping in mind the boxy build, one can live with the fuel inefficiency. Mine returned around 8.75 - 9 km/l. Now I have to fill up and see how much it has actually given because I've driven around 150-180 km since the last fill which was during the last trip. And this 150-180 km has been in the plains.

But all said and done better not to do very long tours in the petrol version if one is spending consciously.

Even the Jeep Wrangler Petrol has the same traits of fuel inefficiency and it weighs much the same too.

But otherwise, our Thar is an extremely accomplished vehicle considering what it offers at the price and for its general purpose.
