India to be the only manufacturing hub for Suzuki Jimny

According to a media report, Suzuki Motor plans to make India an exclusive production hub for the 5-door variant of the Jimny.

Initially, the carmaker plans to import components and assemble the 3-door variant at Maruti Suzuki's Gurgaon plant. By 2022-23, both the 3-door and 5-door variants will be manufactured in India using locally sourced components.

The report states that Suzuki Motor has been in talks with local vendors for the last 6 months to source parts for the Jimny 5-door.

The move is said to be part of Maruti Suzuki's plan to increase its exports share in production from 7% to 20%. At present, the Jimny is built at Suzuki's plant in Kosai, Japan, which has an annual production capacity of 4.9 lakh units.

Reports suggest that Maruti could launch the Jimny in India sometime next year.
