Indianapolis 500: Alonso retires after engine failure

Fernando Alonso's debut at the Indianapolis 500 race ended with an engine blowout, a sight that the Spaniard has often seen with his Formula 1 McLaren Honda car. His Indy car, which was also powered by a Honda powertrain, suffered an engine failure on lap 179, with just 27 laps to the finish.

Alonso showed competitive pace from the start of the race. He even led the pack for 27 laps. The Spanish driver and two-time Formula 1 world champion also had the fastest average lap time of all drivers, before smoke started to come out of the engine compartment of his Andretti Autosport racecar.

Ex-Formula 1 driver, Takuma Sato, won the 2017 Indianapolis 500, becoming the first ever Japanese driver to win the race. Three-time winner - Helio Castroneves was the second to finish the 190-lap race, while Ed Jones took the third spot.
