Japan: 16 of 18 Toyota plants to be shut after earthquake

According to a media report, Toyota will halt production in 16 out of 18 assembly plants on Monday after a 6.7 magnitude earthquake hit Japan's Hokkaido island last Thursday. The earthquake has resulted in the shutdown of the carmaker's transmission facility in Tomakomai, Hokkaido.

All Toyota and Lexus models would be affected, including those exported overseas. However, Daihatsu plants making Toyota brand vehicles would be kept running. Affected export models include the Lexus ES sedan and the GX SUV, the Toyota Prius, 4Runner SUV and the C-HR crossover.

The earthquake has triggered landslides and disrupted power and transport in the region. Over 21 people have been reported dead and 13 missing. Power was restored to majority of the residents early Saturday. However, the government has asked local businesses and residents to reduce energy consumption.
